(ESP-ENG) Escaflowne - Movie Review!

Within anime, the mecha genre is perhaps one of the most appealing to me basically because I grew up watching Evangelion so that influence remained forever in my tastes. As I do week after week I try to look for movies that call my attention for some personal taste or for those that are totally different from what I usually watch, in this case the first applies, which is why I stumbled upon Escaflowne, a movie made as a sequel to the anime of the same name back in the late nineties. I have to say that I haven't seen the series but after watching the film it's very likely that I will, I think it could be very interesting because of the story behind it all.

Dentro del anime el género de mecha es quizás uno de los que más me llaman la atención básicamente porque crecí viendo Evangelion por lo que esa influencia quedó para siempre en mis gustos. Como hago semana tras semanas trato de buscar películas que me llamen mucho la atención por algún gusto personal o por aquellas que sean totalmente distintas a lo que generalmente veo, en este caso aplica lo primero razón entonces por la que me topé con Escaflowne, una película hecha como secuela del anime del mismo nombre por allá a finales de los noventas. Tengo que decir que dicha serie no la he visto pero después de haber visto el film es muy probable que lo haga, creo que puede ser muy interesante por la historia que hay detrás de todo.

The story begins with Hitomi, a girl who lives in an average town where she leads a seemingly normal life. The issue with her is that she is suffering from psychological problems, a kind of existential crisis, which has even led her to want to take her own life. In the midst of this internal struggle, one fine day she is suddenly teleported to a distant world where magic, strange creatures and humans themselves coexist, this world is called Gaea. What she does not know is that for all who inhabit this strange world she is considered a goddess, a goddess who is able to awaken and invoke one of the most important and imposing creatures for them: Escaflowne.

La historia da comienzo con Hitomi, una chica que vive en un pueblo promedio donde lleva una vida aparentemente normal. El tema con ella es que está padeciendo de problemas psicológicos, una especie de crisis existencial, que la ha llevado incluso a querer quitarse la vida. Entre esa lucha que lleva internamente un buen día y muy de repente ella es teletransportada a un mundo lejano donde la magia, criaturas extrañas y los propios humanos conviven, este mundo es llamado Gaea. Lo que ella no sabe es que para todos los que habitan este raro mundo ella es considerada una diosa, diosa que es capaz de despertar e invocar a una de las criaturas más importantes e imponentes para ellos: Escaflowne.

Escaflowne is a kind of biomechanical robot or armor that lives thanks to two things: Hitomi's summoning and Van's blood. In Gaea inhabits the clan of the dragons, the rulers of that place, being Van one of the descendants of that lineage so his blood is pure and royal. But there is a war for the control of the kingdom between the hostile part of the clan and other inhabitants. It is there where Hitomi together with Van will join forces to do their best to stop what could be a catastrophe, thus marking the destiny of the young girl. Here is where the story begins a little, we will see action but also has a very interesting introspective part that in the end is what will mark a little the final path.

Escaflowne es una especie de robot biomecánico o una armadura también pudiera ser que vive gracias a par de cosas: la invocación de Hitomi y por la sangre de Van. En Gaea habita el clan de los dragones, los gobernantes de dicho lugar, siendo Van uno de los descendientes de dicho linaje por lo que su sangre es pura y real. Pero hay una guerra por el control del reino entre la parte hostil de dicho clan y otros habitantes. Es allí en donde Hitomi junto con Van se unirán para hacer lo posible y detener lo que pudiera ser una catástrofe marcando así el destino de la joven chica. Acá es donde comienza un poco la historia, veremos acción pero también tiene una parte introspectiva muy interesante que al final es lo que marcará un poco el camino final.

There is something important that caught my attention and it is the subject of loneliness. Let me explain. Part of Hitomi's problem goes through there, a struggle that coincidentally Van is also carrying. Loneliness can be a reason to stop living, it is an internal battle that many people have and in this story it is shown as part of the core of everything that is happening. The cool thing is that as the story goes on they understand that loneliness can be an engine to overcome everything and by helping each other it is possible to continue feeling lonely but being accompanied. It sounds like a tongue twister but it is simpler than it seems. I really liked this approach, it gives sensitivity in the midst of so much chaos.

Hay algo importante y que me llamó la atención y es el tema de la soledad. Les explico. Parte del problema de Hitomi pasa por ahí, lucha que casualmente también está llevando Van. La soledad puede ser una razón para dejar de vivir, es una batalla interna que llevan muchos y en esta historia lo plasman como parte del núcleo de todo lo que está pasando. Lo cool de todo es que conforme va transcurriendo la historia ellos van entendiendo que esa soledad puede ser un motor para buscar superar todo y al ayudarse mutuamente es posible que sigan sintiéndose solos pero estando acompañados. Suena como un trabalenguas pero es más sencillo de lo que parece. Me gustó mucho este enfoque, da sensibilidad en medio de tanto caos.

The animation is very top, being a film of 2000 we will see many similarities with those anime of the time which for me are really a jewel visually. The fight sequences are also very well done, it is not something that is bad. on the contrary, the level of detail is quite good. There's violence, there's blood, but there's also dark magic and a lot of fantasy; it's a combination that at least for me always works. There is also a somewhat strange combination between the more traditional as a samurai could be with cutting edge technology at the level of science and weaponry, it's like a combination of everything a little bit. To some it may seem nonsense but personally it didn't bother me, in fact I enjoyed the movie without any problems.

La animación está muy top, al ser una película del 2000 veremos muchas similitudes con aquellos anime de la época los cuales para mi son realmente una joya visualmente. Las secuencias de peleas también están muy bien logradas, no es algo que se mal. al contrario, el nivel de detalle es bastante bueno. Hay violencia, hay sangre pero también hay magia oscura y mucha fantasía; es una combinación que por lo menos para mi siempre funciona. También hay una combinación un tanto extraña entre lo más tradicional como pudiera ser un samurai con tecnología de punta a nivel de ciencia y armamento, es como una combinación de todo un poco. A algunos les puede parecer un sin sentido pero personalmente no me molestó, de hecho disfruté la película sin problemas.

The characters are the key to everything. Hitomi is a person who does not know what she has to live for but little by little she will decipher it, her journey, although it is true that it is very superficial because it does not delve much into her past, it will also show us a certain evolution in her way of seeing life. Van follows the same path. In it, besides loneliness, he is moved by revenge, which he will also manage to channel to try to make things better, all with the help, of course, of Hitomi, the Goddess of the wings or the wind. He also has his antagonists who inject his share of evil; there is one in particular whose prototype and way of being is very common: the typical screaming madman with wild eyes with a terrible desire to do harm and generate chaos.

Los personajes son la clave de todo. Hitomi es una persona que no sabe por lo que tiene que vivir pero poco a poco lo va a ir descifrando, ese viaje de ella si bien es verdad es muy superficial porque no ahonda mucho en su pasado igualmente nos mostrará cierta evolución en su forma de ver la vida. Van va por la misma senda. En él, además de la soledad, lo mueve la venganza cosa que también logrará encaminar para buscar hacer mejor las cosas, todo con ayuda, cómo no, de Hitomi, la Diosa de las alas o el viento. También tiene sus antagonistas que le inyectan su cuota de maldad; hay uno en particular que su prototipo y forma de ser es muy común: el típico loco gritón con los ojos desorbitados con unas ansias terribles de hacer daño y generar caos.

In the end it's a worthwhile movie but I found it too short because of the lack of context, that's why I think you have to watch the whole anime. Anyway you can watch and enjoy it without problems, the story is very cool and has a good animation. It lasts about an hour and a half. I leave the trailer below.

Al final es una película que vale la pena pero a mi se me quedó muy corta por la falta de contexto, por eso creo que hay que ver el anime completo. De todas maneras se puede ver y disfrutar sin problemas, la historia es muy cool y cuenta con una buena animación. Dura hora y media aproximadamente. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
