Greetings, Hive! Talking about what is "the best" in something (movies, video games, series, anime, etc) is complicated, I consider that there is no such thing as "the best" because it’s a concept that goes hand in hand with perfection, and as we all know, perfection is clearly subjective. I don't consider myself a connoisseur of anime, I have only seen about 10 or 12 anime throughout my life (for someone who doesn't know about anime it may seem a lot, but for a connoisseur in the field not so much, they can rather see me as someone basic or who only watches mainstream anime) so my criteria to consider a work as "the best" is not exactly the broadest. However I don't think someone has to be an expert in a medium to enjoy it, I mean, it's not wrong if someone just watches trendy anime, I think the important thing is that people become interested in this art and discover that it haves stories and narratives that can be on par with any other audiovisual medium. So if you are someone who enjoys watching anime casually and your favorite anime is Dragon Ball or Naruto, that's fine, there is nothing wrong with that, and if on the contrary, you are one of those who judge others for having "basic" tastes, please don't be like that, rather be glad that anime is more accepted worldwide every day. Anyway, the point of this little reflection is that, what defines if something is perfect or not, if it is "the best" or not, is the condition in which the person who gives his opinion consumes it. When it comes to talk about which is the best shonen I've ever seen I didn't have so much to think about: it’s between Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and Hunter x Hunter. I think that objectively speaking FMAB could be the best shonen I've seen in terms of story, development, structure, characters, narrative coherence, and very important: IT HAS AN ENDING, but as I previously mention, all these definitions are merely subjective and as for my tastes, Hunter x Hunter is the best shonen I've ever seen and also my favorite so far.

So after this long introduction, without any further ado, let's get start!

Hunter x Hunter is a manga written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. The story takes place in a vast world full of mysteries in which those who are fascinated by these mysteries decide to become Hunters in order to have access to a host of economic privileges that allow them to quench their thirst for adventure and explore the unknown, however, for someone to become a Hunter it has to pass two tests conducted by the Selection Committee of the Hunters Association. These exams are very dangerous and potentially deadly, and can only be passed by those who prove to be exceptional individuals both physically and mentally.

This is where our protagonist, Gon Freecs, a 12 year old boy who lives on Whale Island with his aunt Mito, comes in. At a very young age Gon was abandoned by his father, Gin Freecs, to dedicate himself to being a Hunter, in order to understand his father's feelings and at the same time find him, Gon decides to leave the island and become a Hunter. Along the way he will befriend Killua Zoldyck, a boy of the same age who comes from a family of assassins, Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta clan, and Leorio Paladiknight, who wants to become a Hunter in order to study medicine. Together they will go through a series of situations that will take them from teaming up to pass the Hunter exam, to getting involved in a fight for the survival of humans as a species.

While Hunter x Hunter talks about the same tropes we all know in the shonen genre (friendship, fights, self-improvement) I really like how it does it because all the rules of its universe are very well structured; the universe moves by itself and not through its characters, if we remove a character it may change the development of some events but the series will not stop working because of that. There is nothing (or almost nothing) that makes you say "hey, this doesn't make sense", it respects its rules very much and that forces the narrative to resolve conflicts logically and not with power ups given away in the eyes.

Its power scheme, the Nen, is one of the best power schems (maybe the best) I've seen in all of anime, it's so incredibly well structured that it doesn't need to give characters eyes powers pulled out of thin air (sorry, I have a problem with the Uchiha). During its first few arcs everything keeps more or less within the ordinary, very good quality, but ordinary, until the series gets to THAT ARC that everyone has heard of at least once....

Without fear of being wrong I can say that The Chimera Ants is THE BEST arc I've seen in the whole anime. I don't know how to talk about this arc without making spoilers, but the development that all the characters we know have is taken to the limit, it talks about death, the brutality of nature, the supremacy between species, revenge, the concept of power and morality, all without wanting to be pretentious or intellectual, but very well grounded, it has awesome fights, and one of the best rage moments in the history of the industry. It’s sublime.

Although Hunter x Hunter still has no ending, (and let's be honest, it probably won't) it’s a fact that the anime did have a culmination of almost everything that had been presented to us so far, many possibilities were opened in the last episode and an even bigger world to be explored, but I think that if the author decided not to write more, he must have some reason. I know the official statements says that it's because of health problems, but I think it's completely valid a situation in which he simply doesn't know how to continue with the plot in such a solid way and especially after having set the bar so high with Chimera Ants, sometimes as fans we find it hard to appeal to that human side and believe that authors are writing machines with infinite ideas. Of course I’m very curious about what would have been (or will be) the Dark Continent, I would like to see much more and continue enjoying the adventures of Gon, Killua, Leo, Kurapika, and even Hisoka, but I can't take away Hunter x Hunter's merit after having enjoyed it so much, it was an incredible journey that I enjoyed a lot during each episode and I highly recommend it to everyone who wants to watch it. That it doesn't have an ending? It doesn't matter, what matters is the adventure!

Hablar de que es “lo mejor” en algo (películas, videojuegos, series, anime, etc) es complicado, considero que no existe algo a lo que se le pueda catalogar como “lo mejor” ya que es un concepto que va muy de la mano con la perfección, y como todos sabemos, la perfección es netamente subjetiva. Tampoco me considero un conocedor a fondo del anime, apenas he visto unos 10 o 12 animes a lo largo de mi vida (para alguien que no sabe de anime le puede parecer mucho, pero para un entendido en la materia no tanto, más bien puedo verme como alguien básico o que solo ve animes de moda) por lo que mi criterio para considerar una obra como “la mejor” no es precisamente el más amplio. Sin embargo no creo que alguien tenga que ser experto en un medio para poder disfrutarlo, es decir, no está mal que alguien solamente vea animes de moda, creo que lo importante es que las personas se interesen en este arte y descubran que tienen historias y narrativas que pueden estar a la altura de cualquier otro medio audiovisual. Así que si tú eres alguien que disfruta ver anime casualmente y tu anime favorito es Dragon Ball o Naruto, está bien, no tiene nada de malo, y si por el contrario, eres de quienes juzgan a los demás por tener gustos “básicos”, por favor no seas así, más bien alégrate de que cada día el anime es más aceptado mundialmente. En fin, el punto de esta pequeña reflexión es que lo que define si algo es perfecto o no, si es “lo mejor” o no, es las condiciones en las que la persona que opina lo consume. Para hablar de cuál es el mejor shonen que he visto no la tenía tan complicada: entre Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood y Hunter x Hunter. Creo que objetivamente hablando FMAB podría ser el mejor shonen que he visto en cuanto a historia, desarrollo, estructura, personajes, coherencia narrativa, y muy importante: TIENE UN FINAL, pero como dije más arriba, todas estas definiciones son meramente subjetivas y en cuanto a mis gustos, Hunter x Hunter es el mejor shonen que he visto y también mi favorito hasta ahora.

Así que después de esta larga introducción, ahora sí, sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!

Hunter x Hunter es un manga escrito e ilustrado por Yoshihiro Togashi. La historia toma lugar en un mundo sumamente amplio y lleno de misterios en el que quienes se ven fascinados por estos misterios deciden convertirse en Hunters (cazadores) para poder tener acceso a un sinfín de privilegios económicos que les permitan saciar su sed de aventura y de explorar lo desconocido, sin embargo para alguien convertirse en Hunter tiene que aprobar dos exámenes realizados por el Comité Seleccionador de la Asociación de Hunters. Estos exámenes son muy peligrosos y potencialmente mortales, y solo los pueden aprobar aquellos que demuestran ser individuos excepcionales tanto físicamente como mentalmente.

Aquí es donde entra nuestro protagonista, Gon Freecs, un niño de 12 años que vive en la Isla Ballena junto a su tía Mito, a muy temprana edad Gon fue abandonado por su papá, Gin Freecs, para dedicarse a ser un Hunter, con el fin de entender los sentimientos de su padre y al mismo tiempo encontrarlo, Gon decide dejar la isla y convertirse en un Hunter. En el camino se hará amigo de Killua Zoldyck, un niño de su misma edad que proviene de una familia de asesinos, Kurapika, el último sobreviviente del clan Kurta, y Leorio Paladiknight, quién quiere ser un Hunter para poder estudiar medicina. Juntos atravesarán una serie de situaciones que los llevarán desde hacer equipo para aprobar el examen de Hunter, hasta involucrarse en una lucha por la sobrevivencia de los seres humanos como especie.

Si bien Hunter x Hunter toca los mismos tropos que todos conocemos en el shonen (amistad, peleas, superación personal) me gusta mucho como lo hace porque todas las reglas de su universo están muy bien estructuradas; el universo se mueve en sí mismo y no a través de sus personajes, si quitamos a algún personaje puede que cambie el desarrollo de algunos eventos pero la serie no va a dejar de funcionar por eso. No hay nada (o casi nada) que te haga decir “hey, esto no tiene sentido”, respeta mucho sus reglas y eso obliga a la narrativa a resolver los conflictos de manera lógica y no con power ups regalados en los ojos.

Su sistema de poder, el Nen, es uno de los mejores sistemas de poder (quizás el mejor) que he visto en todo el anime, está tan increíblemente bien estructurado que no necesita dar a los personajes poderes en los ojos sacados de la nada (perdón, tengo un problema con los Uchiha). Durante sus primeros arcos todo se mantiene más o menos dentro de lo común, de muy buena calidad, pero común, hasta que la serie llega a ESE ARCO del que todos han escuchado hablar al menos una vez…

Sin temor a equivocarme puedo decir que Las Hormigas Quimera es EL MEJOR arco que he visto en todo el anime. No sé de qué manera hablar de este arco sin hacer spoilers, pero el desarrollo que tienen todos los personajes que conocemos es llevado hasta el límite, habla de la muerte, la brutalidad de la naturaleza, la supremacía entre especies, la venganza, el concepto de poder y moralidad, todo sin querer ser pretencioso o intelectual, pero muy bien fundamentado, tiene peleas impresionantes, y uno de los mejores rage moments en la historia de la industria. Es sublime.

A pesar de que Hunter x Hunter aún no tiene final, (y seamos honestos, probablemente no lo tenga) es un hecho que el anime si tuvo una culminación de casi todo lo que se nos había presentado hasta el momento, se abrieron muchas posibilidades en último episodio y un mundo aún más grande por ser explorado, pero considero que si el autor decidió no escribir más alguna razón debe tener. Sé que las declaraciones oficiales nos dicen que es por problemas de salud, pero creo que es completamente valida una situación en la que simplemente ya no sabe cómo continuar con la trama de manera tan sólida y sobre todo después de haber puesto la barra tan alta con las Hormigas Quimera, a veces como fanáticos nos cuesta apelar a ese lado humano y creemos que los autores son máquinas de escribir con ideas infinitas. Sí, tengo mucha curiosidad acerca de lo que hubiese sido (o será) el Continente Oscuro, me gustaría ver mucho más y seguir disfrutando de las aventuras de Gon, Killua, Leo, Kurapika, y hasta Hisoka, pero no por eso puedo quitarle merito a Hunter x Hunter después de haberlo disfrutado tanto, fue un viaje increíble que disfrute muchísimo durante cada episodio y que recomiendo ampliamente a todas las personas que lo quieran ver. ¿Qué no tiene final? No importa, ¡lo que importa es la aventura!
