Wednesday Walk - Summer Walk on the Flat River

For Wednesday Walk this week, I'd like to share a few photos from a walk I recently took along the Flat River in Western Michigan, USA. In particular, I took a walk along a stretch of the river located next to a small town called Fallasburg. The sleepy little town was first settled in the mid 1840s, and in 1871, a 100 foot long wooden bridge was erected across the river. Though it is only wide enough for one car at a time, the bridge remains in use to this day.

Just upstream from a bridge is a beautiful wooded park that rest along the banks of the river. The clear, slow-moving waters here offer much-needed reprieve to people and wildlife alike on hot summer days.

Further inland and away from the riverbank, the floodplains give way to wetlands and tributaries that snake across the landscape. Don't get caught out here without big spray; the mosquitos will eat you alive!

Though the bugs may be relentless here, their are still treasures to be found in these unforgiving woods. While making my away along the riverbank, flashes of bright orange and gold jumped out of my peripherals among a sea of brown and green. As I make my way closer, I realized that I had come across a large fruiting of Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus), a prized edible fungi whose taste is often likened to that of chicken or crab depending on whom is asked and how it is prepared.

Alongside the Chicken of the Woods was another edible (though much less prized) and beautiful species known as the Old-Man-of-the-Woods (Strobilomyces strobilaceus), which can be identified by its cap adorned with black soft, angular scales. Though I did not harvest either species to bring home, I was excited to find these specimens nonetheless.
