A Stroll Through Street Macedonia, Skopje 🚶 From the Sultans to the 21st century

Добар ден на сите! 👋😁

Today I'm going to show you the oldest and most famous "street" in Macedonia. I put street in quotations because it's only meant for walking nowadays. 🤷‍♀ Regardless, as with most things I show you it's dripping in history, and I can't wait for you guys to experience it. *// or to watch me walk you through it, same difference

Street Macedonia as it is now called, was built not soon after the Ottoman conquest - so we're talking 16th century. It was meant to provide easy travel to the Old Bazaar - remember that place? 😁

Nowadays it ends at the City Square/Square Macedonia, which was one of our stops the last time we took a stroll. So I thought this would be a nice connective tissue for the previous articles and this one. 😇

🚩 SULTAN'S ARRIVAL 🚩

So we are gonna start our walk from where the Sultan would have. 👑

The current street is not the street of old. It is way shorter. The one used today is littered with cafe after cafe after bookstore after boutique after cafe. 😂 And like I said it's exclusively for walking, as you can see in the picture below.

The street is one of the first places tourists use. Its proximity to the main square, several malls, and several government buildings, makes it the most walked-on spot in the city. 💯

There's also this bull statue, why? 😅 I have no effing clue duudee.

There are many little side streets, one of which leads to the building dedicated to the main governmental political party. Meaning, when a party wins the election, it gets to move in here.

Swanky, I know.

But of course, it's not all cafes and vendors - one of the most famous monuments in the city is located on this street. 🔻

🚩 MOTHER TERESA'S HOUSE 🚩

So, for those that didn't know, Mother Teresa was born in Skopje. Thusly, (I'm using fancy words today) there is a monument of sorts dedicated to her - The House of Mother Teresa.

The house is used for many events and the like. From political declarations to musical performances. It has become the hub for a lot of artists (and old people 😅)

And yes, this place is also a hub for a lot of tourists. For good and bad. 😁 Also. There is a handy-dandy fast food kiosk right in front of it. I say convenient!

I couldn't enter the house itself this time around, but you have to trust me it's cool. 😇

🚩 ON THE OTHER SIDE 🚩

So the street intersects one of the busiest actual streets in Skopje - Rekort. *// don't fault me for the pic to the left, I know it sucks, ok? I had a different framing in mind when I took it......

As we move forward we get closer to the main square.

And as we approach Square Macedonia we reach the end of our walk. 😭

And as we reach the end, let's look at it, wait for it... 🥁, statues! yayyyyyyyyy

Tzar Samuil reigned in this region around the 10th century. He battled with the Byzantine Empire and his forts are splattered all cross the country. I will probably show you the one here in Skopje on another walk. Ignore the tags please, I had those bleeping scratches... 😡

And this is a statue of a fellow called Chento. He was the guiding force in Macedonia gaining its independence and was the unofficial first president of the country back in 1946. 🖖

And that's it for out walk, I hope you guys had fun. 😊

Not sure where we'll go next week, but I reckon I'll find something interesting.

Obligatory shout-out to the 🍕PIZZA🍕 gang, 🤙 gang. 🤙

All pictures were taken by me using an iPhone 11.
