A Return to Coffin Road, Ashover, Derbyshire

We've been exploring the nearby village of Ashover recently. My friend has never been to Coffin Road so I revisited it, but this time going a slightly different way. Another uphill walk though, but some lovely views on the way up.

The old packhorse trail is lined by standing stones. To the villagers, it is known as Coffin Road. Alledgedly, neighbouring villages had no burial ground of their own so mourners and coffin bearers had to bring their dead to Ashover, travelling along the trail to give them a Christian burial.

I'm not sure if this is true or a myth, but with the trail's standing stones, it's the coolest little trail I've seen.

It was another hot day, so the descent to the village was a lot easier than going up. We stopped off so Mr Lurcher could have a drink and a paddle in the river next to the flagstone bridge.
