I have previously shared a walk of the Main Street of Port Melbourne here @chocolatescorpi/a-warm-wandering-wishful-wonderful-wednesday-walk-through-port-melbourne-to-the-beach-and-beyond and gave you a little bit of a history on this interesting suburb of Melbourne, but it’s quite a large suburb and at that stage I did not take you up to the historically significant Station Pier where I walked all over those over those old timbers to take these great photos!

So if you’d like to join my pictorial tour, come on in to follow me and I’ll show you a little bit of my #wednesdaywalk at the historic Station Pier and Beacon Cove in Port Melbourne where the Spirit of Tasmania now docks, where I got some great shots all around the area.

Station Pier, the end of the line for the #109 tram, once transporting passengers along the TRAIN line from the numerous cargo and passenger ships that docked at the pier in the days gone by, now carrying both locals passengers and those from the international cruiseships that also dock here during the summer cruising season.

At the meeting of the Women’s Welcome Committee (WWC) held on Thursday 31 January 1918, Mrs E F Russell reminded the group of an intention raised some time ago to erect a monument on Sinclair Parade to commemorate the memory of fallen soldiers and the work of the committee. She suggested a band rotunda and drinking fountain, as there is no sweeter commemoration than music.

BEACON33-rotunda.png

With about 1,000 people in attendance, the rotunda was opened by the Mayor, Cr Richard Gill, about 3pm on the afternoon of Sunday 27 October 1918.

The Port Melbourne Leading Lights were built in 1924, and in conjunction guided ships by marking the centre of the Port Melbourne Channel from Port Phillip Bay.

BEACON11- lighthouse.png

The Port Melbourne Leading Lights are of architectural and historic significance as a rare building type in Victoria because of the materials and form adopted which represents a notable application of the Trinity lighthouse design to a navigational installation of this type.

BEACON45- sea beacon2.png

Whilst not distinctive in function, the combination of form and placement of the Port Melbourne Leading Lights, one in the water which of timber construction is unusual when compared to other similar structures.

BEACON45- sea beacon1.png

The easement following the line of sight between the lights is essential to their significance, linking as it does the land based light to the water based light.

BEACON45- sea beacon4.png

The Port Melbourne Front Light is a round and tapered wooden-framed light built on piles. It used to be linked to the shore by a narrow wooden footbridge.

BEACON45- sea beacon3.png

The tower used to show a fixed green light over a 26 degree sector, whilst a second green light occulted every six seconds in the four degree sector marking the centre of the Port Melbourne Channel. The light has not been in use for many years.

BEACON44- land beacon1png.png

The Port Melbourne Leading Lights are historically significant as structures surviving from an important visual and functional link between Princes and Station Piers and along with these piers reflect the pattern of shipping activity during the 1920s and 1930s.

BEACON44- land beacon3.png

The Rear Light is a 26 metre concrete tower, 500 m north of the Front Light.

BEACON44- land beacon2.png

Its main light is red, occulting every six seconds, and three metres below it is a 24 hour a day directional light, with green, white and red sectors, each showing over only a fraction of a degree, to mark the precise centre of the channel, in a particularly narrow arc of 1.5 degrees.

And here is the door to your own lighthouse @tattoodjay 🤣 A bit squashy inside though I think...

BEACON44- land beacon4.png

The lighthouses have been preserved as part of a new housing estate that has transformed the old industrial port area, originally built to guide ships into.

The Rear Light is still operating and has become a feature of the new residential street Beacon Vista to the port, aligned with the Rear and Front Lights.

BEACON44- land beacon5.png

The Port Melbourne Front Light, just offshore between Princes Pier and Station Pier, is a round and tapered wooden-framed light built on piles. It used to be linked to the shore by a narrow wooden footbridge, which fell into disrepair and was removed.

BEACON12- lighthouse.png

The tower used to show a fixed green light over a 26 degree sector, whilst a second green light occulted every six seconds in the four degree sector marking the centre of the Port Melbourne Channel. The light has not been exhibited for many years.

The double story green building in the centre stands on Princess Pier which Opened in 1951, the pier was able to hold some of the biggest mail ships and steamers back in the day. Over the years, the pier played a key role in both commerce and defence.

As you can see, this is also home to many thousands of Port Melbournians.

BEACON48-towers2.png

Can you imagine how much it would cost to buy or rent in this gorgeous area?

BEACON48-towers1.png

Which reminds me a bit of Miami in the USA maybe???

BEACON48-towers34png.png

Either way, it is a beautiful place to be.

BEACON48-towers3.png

On the way out I found these flowers for you to enjoy.
