Today I want to invite you to a family walk we took last week to my brother's house in the countryside. Like every year my mom always wants to visit my older brother's house who has a birthday every July 6th but it wasn't until Sunday that we all got out of work and went there to de-stress a bit and stretch our legs.
Hoy quiero invitarlos a una caminata familiar que emprendimos la semana pasada rumbo a la casa de mi hermano en el campo. Como cada año mi mamá siempre quiere ir de visita a casa de mi hermano mayor quien cumple años cada 6 de julio pero no fue sino hasta el domingo que todos nos desocupamos y fuimos a desestresarnos un poco por allá y a estirar nuestras piernas.
My mom is the only one who was free to walk since at 86 years old we can't take her on foot, so my nephew has become an expert at carrying grandmothers on the bike without dropping them. :-DDDDDDD
Mi mamá es la única que salió libre de caminar ya que a sus 86 años no la podemos llevar a pie, así que mi sobrino ya se convirtió en todo un experto para llevar abuelas en la moto sin dejarlas caer. :-DDDDD
Every time the school vacations arrive we go to my mother's house in the countryside for a while; also because she will soon have her birthday and we like to make preparations to do something very nice for her with her family and friends.

Cada vez que llegan las vacaciones escolares nos vamos a una temporada a casa de mi madre, en el campo; también porque pronto estará de cumpleaños y nos gusta realizar preparativos para hacerle algo muy bonito con sus familiares y amigos.

Life in the countryside is relaxing, spending a season among the trees, rivers and mountains is something that refreshes us and charges us with energy to return later to the city with recharged batteries. Being able to visit my family, see my mother and hug her is the most wonderful thing that can happen to me. The doctors have always told us to let her be free, because when she stops and does not want to do anything, it is because the years have finally defeated her.
La vida en el campo es relajante, pasarse una temporada entre los árboles, ríos y montañas es algo que nos refresca y nos carga de energía para volver luego a la ciudad con las pilas recargadas. Poder visitar a mi familia, ver a mi madre, abrazarla es lo más maravilloso que me puede pasar. Comprársela en lo que ella quiere es otro tema, a pesar de la edad que tiene sigue caminando de un lado a otro sin parar, los médicos siempre nos han dicho que la dejemos ser libre, porque cuando ya ella pare y no quiera hacer nada es porque los años por fin lograron vencerla.
As I told you, every year she goes to my brother's place to bring him cake and sing birthday songs, but here the thing is that he lives far away, in the mountains, in a countryside of Táchira State in Venezuela, very close to the border with Colombia. To go there there is no car or bus, so we have to get up very early, make our arepa and go for a walk before the rain or the sun hits us. It is almost two hours of walking if you go at a fast pace, but if you go with children as in our case we have to go slowly and therefore we take longer. You don't know how we spent the whole way begging for a tail (a cart) to pass by and take us there.
Como les dije ella cada año va donde mi hermano a llevarle torta y cantarle cumpleaños, pero aquí el tema es que él vive muy lejos, hacia las montañas, en un campo del Estado Táchira en Venezuela muy cerca de la frontera con Colombia. Para ir allá no hay carro, ni autobuses, así que tenemos que pararnos bien temprano, hacernos nuestra arepa y salir a caminar antes que nos caiga la lluvia o nos pegue el sol. Son casi dos horas de caminata si vas a paso rápido, pero si vas con niños como es nuestro caso nos toca ir despacio y por tanto nos tardamos más. No saben cómo pasamos por todo el camino rogando que pase una cola (Un carro) y nos lleve.
But we are used to it, so we put on our best shoes and while we are talking, taking pictures and laughing we move forward until we get there. My mom left after us, my nephew took her around 9 o'clock, but we left earlier and arrived almost at 10 o'clock in the morning.
Pero ya nosotros estamos acostumbrados, por eso nos ponemos nuestros mejores zapatos y mientras vamos conversando, tomando fotos y riéndonos avanzamos hasta llegar. Mi mamá salió después que nosotros, mi sobrino la llevo a eso de las 9, en cambio nosotros salimos más temprano y llegamos casi a las 10 de la mañana.
There is not much communication there either, so we spent the whole way praying that my brother had not left. We almost always arrive by surprise, but my brother and his wife are very attentive and immediately give us water, coffee, cheese, fruit and of course later lunch.
Allá tampoco hay mucha comunicación, así que nos la pasamos por todo el camino rezando para que mi hermano no haya salido. Casi siempre llegamos de sorpresa, pero mi hermano y su esposa son muy atentos y enseguida nos brindan agua, café, queso, fruta y por supuesto más tarde el almuerzo.
My brother has many cows, he sells part of the milk in town and the other part he makes cheese. But on his farm there is also coffee, banana plants, milk, lemon and lemons. You don't know how many chickens he has. That's my brother, a very hard-working man, for him there are no Saturdays or Sundays, he got used to working in the fields since he was a child and that's why he doesn't know how to do anything else but be among the cows and the crops.
Mi hermano tiene muchas vacas, vende una parte de la leche en la ciudad y la otra parte hace queso. Pero en su finca también hay café, matas de cambur, lechosa, limón. No saben la cantidad de gallinas que tiene. Así es mi hermano, un hombre muy trabajador, para él no hay sábados ni domingos, se acostumbró a trabajar en el campo desde muy niño y por eso no sabe hacer otra cosa que estar entre las vacas y los sembradíos.
At about 4 o'clock in the afternoon we had to say goodbye, my nephew left with my mother on the motorcycle and we left on foot. The only good thing was that God heard my mother's prayers (she has direct communication with him) and that's why it didn't rain; there! But we arrived at the house and the rain came, it seemed like a deluge.
Ya como a las 4 de la tarde nos tuvimos que despedir, mi sobrino arrancó con mi madre en la moto y nosotras nos fuimos a pie. Lo único bueno de todo fue que Dios escuchó las oraciones de mi madre (ella tiene comunicación directa con él) y por eso no nos llovió; ¡ahí! Pero eso sí, llegando a la casa y se vino la lluvia, parecía un diluvio mas bien.
In short, I was very happy to have visited my brother, I did not expect that walk, but I was overjoyed. The truth is that I hadn't been there for a long time, before when there were cars and gasoline in my country we could go and visit everyone, but that has changed and we have to adapt to the changes.
En definitiva me alegró mucho haber visitado a mi hermano, no me esperaba esa caminata, pero me recargo de alegría. La verdad es que tenía mucho tiempo que no iba, antes cuando había carros y gasolina en mi país podíamos ir y visitar a todo el mundo, pero eso ha cambiado y tenemos que adaptarnos a los cambios.
While I was doing this tour I could remember beautiful moments of my childhood when my mom and I would go through the mountains, we would pass the border of Colombia and we would arrive to a small town called Ricaurte, there we would buy shoes, clothes, fabrics, sweets.
Mientras realizaba este recorrido pude recordar bellos momentos de mi infancia cuando mi mamá y yo nos íbamos por las montañas, pasábamos la frontera de Colombia y llegábamos a un pueblito que se llama Ricaurte, allí comprabamos zapatos, ropa, telas, dulces.
Remembering is living friends and I like that, do not miss if you have the opportunity to spend a few days with your family and if it is in the countryside much better. Here you can breathe peace, tranquility, eat healthy, share with friendly, loving people. That is why I thank God for having been born a farmer.
Recordar es vivir amigos y eso me gusta, no desaproveches si tienes la oportunidad de pasarte unos días con tu familia y si es en el campo mucho mejor. Aquí se respira paz, tranquilidad, se come sano, se comparte con gente amable, cariñosa. Por eso le doy gracias a Dios por haber nacido campesina.
