Photo memories of a long distance walk gone by

For #wednesdaywalk brought by the ever gracious @tattoodjay I am delving into my photo library reminiscing on a 2 week walk I and a small group of friends did in Italy in 2015. Looking at the photos I so swiftly found myself back in Italy walking the many paths, roads, grass and dirt track of this 200 km trek in the cold and the heat. We walked from St Francis's Monastery located outside Florence up and down mountains and hills to the town of Assisi with the beautiful Basilica called St Francis of Assisi.

We posed for photos all the way taken by our organiser and professional photographer Bill Bennett. Every photo has a story. In this photo I recall our eager expectations for a happy walking second day only to find a landslide across the planned path. It took us 2 hours to get to the starting point for the day's walk. It was a very long hard day and the most memorable.

We walked passed abandoned farm houses feeling for the farmers and their families who probably had no choice but to leave. The economy in Italy was suffering as were the economies in many other European countries at the time.

I recall the heat on the day we walked past this empty house deciding that it had to be cooler inside.

Inside we went and made ourselves comfortable on some big bricks to rest and have a bite to eat as we cooled down. I am sorry that I missed my chance to walk through the house checking the state of the rooms and taking photos for a great post. I had not read any posts by the intrepid explorer of empty and run down old buildings @slobberchops. Now that would be a different story.

We walked and walked in amongst the beautiful country admiring the scenery day in and day out meeting up with very few people.

We saw highly entertaining signs along the way and followed road signs although we were following a map downloaded on our iPhones.

We would arrive in towns looking for our hotels at the end of the walking days, usually that meant another few more kilometres added on. Oh how feet weary were we during this long walk.

Sometimes taking a short cut through a 'barb wire fence' to our nightly accomodation.

Eventually after a couple of weeks full of adventurous walking we arrived at our destination, Assisi feeling elated that we had done it.

Thus ends my little #wednesdaywalk for this week, it was mighty nice reminiscing. Thank you for joining me.

Here is the beautiful Basilica that tourists flocked to and will one day do so again once covid goes away.
