About Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian

Mister Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian was born in the Ottoman Empire 1869 and died 1955 in Lisbon (Portugal), he was a #business man, an #art #collector and #philanthropist of #Armenian origin.

He was trying to bring the Eastern and Western cultures together, Mister Gulbenkian was above all a “business #architect”.
Thanks to his vision at the time, and of course his contacts and powers of persuasion, Mr. Gulbenkian played a nevertheless very decisive role in the #international #negotiations that led to the exploitation of the extraordinarily rich oil fields in Al-Jazeera (#Iraq) in the first half of the 20th century. One does not have to approve of this, however, it is written in his curriculum vitae, if one may put it that way. In the course of his life, he accumulated a fascinating #collection, worth seeing and #unique, which was strongly influenced by his #travels and his personal taste.
What is somewhat curious, Mr. Gulbenkian took #British citizenship in 1902, however, he lived to the end in #Portugal (but never had #Portuguese citizenship) and finally died in #Lisbon in 1955. In Lisbon, he established an international #foundation in his will, which was to bear his name and #contribute to the welfare of all #mankind. Very tricky all, but in the end it is a beautiful collection from all #countries such as #France or #Italy, to name only some examples.

About the Buildings and the Garden

The entire building, which houses both the #Foundation's #headquarters and is home to the #Gulbenkian #Museum and also the #Art #Library, is set in a ~7.5 hectare #garden. At one end of this #garden is the #CAM #building, which is being expanded according to a design by #architect Kengo Kuma. Therefore, parts of the garden are not accessible and also surrounded by a construction fence at the moment.

Again, the modernist building complex, which includes the headquarters of the Foundation, the Gulbenkian Museum and the surrounding garden, was even awarded the Valmor Prize in the year '75 and in 2010 it was also officially included in the National Cultural Heritage of Portugal as the first #contemporary work.

I like to let the #pictures, #photos and #Artworks speak for its own. Thats why I don't comment every artwork. Mostly our inner knowledge or feelings knows already the meaning or we understand on another #creative level all of rhis art. Just feel it. Just watch it.
