We Are Alive! February 24th, 2023 20 Hours Without Electricity

Yesterday evening, the lights went back on. We were without electricity for 20 hours and it was a great learning experience.

It turned out that the problem was right in our own neighborhood, in the yard of our neighbor. It was in the afternoon when we saw the DTE trucks showing up. They had to wap their trailer just to break the ice enough to get the tailgate to come down! Everything was covered in ice!

Even the grass was a matrix of ice!

The ice storm began with rain, then the temperature dropped quickly and all the water froze in place!

We had to be careful because the weight of the ice would cause tree branches to fall.

Life At Home

A while back, during the lockdown, we began to wonder what would happen if we were restricted to our homes and power went out. My wife said "At least the furnace would keep us warm!", to which I reminded her, "our gas furnace still requires electricity to run". It hit us like a ton of bricks.

We need something to keep us warm if the power went out! First choice is a wood stove, second choice is a gas stove. Then my wife saw a gas stove on clearance at our local hardware store. I installed it right away, we had it functioning for at least a year or two, but this was the first time we actually RELIED on it to keep the home warm.

Our home never dipped below 60 degrees (15 C) and our family remained comfortable.

We blocked off portions of the house we weren't using to conserve heat.

We got our camp stove out and enjoyed our normal meals together as a family!

Later in the day, we saw someone from DTE on top of a pole restringing a line. We knew power would be on soon.

It was a great learning experience and we feel just a little better prepared for at least a 20+ hour power outage.

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations. Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books. I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.
