Last evening was the event that my wife has been coordinating. We arrived an hour early, but it was mostly set up when we got there. We put out flyers, cards, lit candles, set up tables. The even was supposed to begin at 6, but only a half-dozen or so people arrived, so we postponed the food and the event until 7.
The reason so many arrived late was because of another event earlier. We had a scheduling conflict, which is a great lesson for us: pay attention to other events and adjust accordingly! Thankfully, we were able to adjust on the fly and it worked out.
The turn out was much lower than expected. We had hoped for about 50 - 80 people, but because it was announced with such short noticed (and the scheduling conflict) many people who would have come did not. But we are not discouraged! We learned a lot, the food was good, the service was good and the speakers did an excellent job with their presentations.
We consider it a success because with only one-week's notice, we went from no event, to a profitable event. Even if it were less of a fund-raiser and more of a small gathering. Still, the ticket price brought in more cash than the expense, so it was not a loss.
For a first time event, it went pretty well. Now on to the next one! The idea is to do one of these per week (if we can) and get the word out.
