As we get ready for the High Holy Day and prepare for our journey south for Sukkot, there is much to do. We are practicing getting our family in order to make this annual series of events easier and smoother for ourselves and for our family. In order to do this, we have to operate by faith and trust that things will work out. We act wisely, act accordingly and take care of business - but bearing that yoke completely on our own shoulders is a weight we can hardly bear.
The Yoke of the Kingdom
I've been thinking of burdens and what it means to bear a yoke. If you've ever helped a person move and lifted heavy furniture - that is what I think of when I hear the word "yoke" and "burden". I think of feeling my muscles strain, sweat dripping from my face and the weight bearing on my body.
It is a heavy yoke, difficult to move, requiring much will-power and effort.
But the kingdom of Heaven is not a heavy yoke. The heavy burden is the yoke that the world places on it's people. We are expected to bear this heavy yoke and love the world for it. The world desires us to be happy slaves (own nothing and be happy) and maximize our load for their own profit. It is very difficult and causes great stress and anxiety. They are testing God's creation:
Why then would you test God by placing a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we are strong enough to bear?
But the yoke of Yeshua the Messiah (the Anointed One) is not like this.
Come to Me, all who are weak and burdened and I shall relieve you. Place My yoke upon yourselves and learn from Me: that I am pleasant and humble in Spirit. and you shall find rest for your souls for My yoke is sweet and My burden is light.
His yoke is SWEET (not bitter) and his burden is LIGHT (not heavy). Therefore the work of the Kingdom is sweet joy and not a burden to bear!
The Anointed One frees us to freedom! Stand firm, then, and never again be held in the yoke of slavery!
Why would we ever forsake the good work placed before us and pick up the world's yoke again? The old burden, full of sin and perverse pleasure and stress and anxiety? No, we have accepted the Yoke of Messiah, free of anxiety and worry.
Do not be anxious in this world about your soul (about what to eat and drink) or your body (about what to wear). Your soul profits from eating and drinking and your body profits from clothing, but your Father in the Heavens provides that which is truly profitable for your soul and body. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow has enough trouble of its own. Today is sufficient for its own problems.
We must not seek what the world seeks, which is mammon, increase and material wealth. Instead, we seek the riches of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Do not fear, little flocklet, for it delights your Father to give you the Reign. If you do not seek what the nations of the world seek (what you may eat or drink or wear) but rather seek first the Reign of God and His righteousness, then everything you need shall be supplied for you.
What a blessing: everything you need shall be supplied for you! Seek the Reign of God (the kingdom of Heaven) first, then everything will be taken care of in your life!
If you are able to carry the full yoke of Yehovah and keep the instructions of Yehovah, neither adding to them nor taking away from them, you shall become perfect, as your Father in the Heavens is perfect, but if you are not able, do whatever instructions you are able.
