Passive Income - On Hive - Curation Rewards - IAAC #177

Hi there and welcome to my vlog, my name is Erik Gustafsson and I go by the handle @flaxz on 3speak, CTPtalk and Hive.

Passive Income - On Hive - Curation Rewards

In this video I talk about passive income on Hive, and here I go through how Curation Rewards work.

So rewards on posts and comments are split 50/50 between Authors/Curators for payouts in Hive, but there are also other factors that affect Curation Rewards, and do note that you start getting Curation Rewards if you have Voting Power of around 100 Hive Power or more and given that you vote with 100% at that level.

To start with we have the Convergent Linear Rewards Curve, which at the starting point of 2 cents that is the payout threshold, votes are worth 50% of their full potential, and then they increase in value with a logarithmic curve and converge at a total post payout of 20 Hive, and then the votes are worth 100% of their full potential.

If you want to read more about how this works then read this post from @dustbunny, it also have great illustrations of the curve, The Fork and the Bunny.

This means that if you want to maximize your Curation Rewards you want to vote on posts that has a total payout of 20 Hive or more, and at the current price of Hive (16 cents) that is $3.2 in Hive Rewards.

But this is not the only factor, we also have the Curation Window, and this complicates things a bit more if you want to maximize your Curation Rewards.

What the Curation Window means is that you get maximum Curation Rewards if you vote a post at exactly 5 minutes after it's been posted, and then it's a linear curve before and after that time.

@ketcom makes a really great job of explaining how this works in his post, Best Post Upvote Time For HF21 Optimum Curation Reward.

It is now that it gets really complicated, because to maximze Curation Rewards you want to vote on a post with a payout over $3.2 in Hive Rewards, and at exactly 5 minutes, which is in 99.9% of cases before any post gets big upvotes.

But this is where Hive.vote comes in, with this dapp you can setup automatic voting with Fanbase and with Curation Trails, and set it to vote at an exact time.

You also need to account a bit for a delay between the time you set and the time the vote is done on the blockchain, so use decimals and set it to something between 4.15 and 4.45 to get the vote in at the optimum time.

Now that is for Fanbase, which means you follow a specific author with votes, and you can in addition to time also set how many votes to do on a daily and weekly basis.

Then there is also Curation Trails, which means that you follow the votes that another account is making and vote on the posts that they vote on, and here you also need to take into account what time that they do their vote and adjust your timing accordingly.

For Curation Trails you can go with scaled votes or with fixed votes, and what is best in your case depends mostly on how much Hive Power you have in relation to the trail account, and what percentage they vote with, you want each vote you make to be large enough to have a curation reward, but still not depleting your Voting Power.

You can also set in the settings at what % you want the autovoting to cut off, and the best is somewhere between 85% to 90% Voting Power.

To track your ROI on your votes and how it develops go to Hivestats.io, type in your username and look for a red field called Curation APR, this will show you a % of how much you are earning in relation to your effective Hive Power in Curation Rewards on an annual rate.

Your Curation APR is what you want to increase as much as you can to maximize your passive earnings in Curation Rewards.

I hope that it did not get too technical, and good luck growing your Curation Rewards.

I Am Alive - Day 177

It is now my day 177 for the #IAmAliveChallenge, and you can read how it started and how to join in this guide, I Am Alive Challenge - The Guide.

This is all about celebrating that you are alive despite the hard times we now live in, and to share that with the world and the Hive blockchain, you are alive, and that matters.
