Pretty specific in my opinion. John D. receives a $1000 check from his father ("Devil Bill") and set off! Ready to make his fortune in the late 1850s After reading about the oil business just starting to become profitable he was immediately interested. Clark and Samuel Andrews, a chemist who had built an oil refinery but knew little about the business of getting his product to market. In 1865 the shrewd John D. bought out his partners for $72,500. His plan was to create a large company controlled by him which would control all oil acquirement, sale and distribution. > By 1870, Rockefeller was begging bankers for more loans. This was all secret. ### Step 2: Rockefeller made sure his rates for transportation was much cheaper than other refineries. ### Step 3: With much cheaper production costs, Rockefeller's competitors stood bewildered! # In Just 9 Years... All over the planet people tried to mimick the success of Standard Oil. > One such competitor emerged from the Caucasus in the 1870s, where Imperial Russia had opened up the vast Caspian Sea oil deposits to private development. This would become an immense project which has never been attempted before! Sophisticated engineering and secrecy were the two key factors which would be vital to the success of the plan.
