The Fine Art of Reinforcement: How to Take Your Skills to the Next Level

Mastery of any skill is a beautiful thing. It's like a symphony of muscle memory and mental acuity coming together to create something truly special. But like any symphony, it's easy to become complacent with your talents, letting the music play on autopilot. Recently, I had an epiphany about this, and it hit me like a chord out of tune. I realized that I had been coasting on my guitar-playing abilities, and my skills had begun to deteriorate.

You see, when you attain mastery in a skill, your brain becomes so accustomed to performing that task that it can do so without conscious effort. It's like driving a car, at first, every movement is a conscious decision, but eventually, it becomes second nature. The problem is, when you're on autopilot, it's easy to let errors slip in without noticing. And as time goes on, those errors compound, and before you know it, you're not as great as you used to be.

I had stopped going back to the basics of guitar playing, and I had stopped doing my finger exercises. I had become complacent in my abilities, and it didn't feel like I had the skill or was as good as I used to be. And it's not just guitar playing, this applies to any skill. When we stop learning, we stop growing. The basics are just as important as anything new we learn. It's easy to feel like you've mastered the basics and don't need to go back and strengthen them, but the truth is, growth can only happen when we keep strengthening our roots.

Think of it like a tree, the roots are the basics, and the branches are the new things we learn. Without strong roots, the tree cannot reach for the sky. It's easy to get caught up in reaching for the sky and forget how important the ground is. But it's the ground that keeps us standing strong, and without it, we will fall unexpectedly.

This happens to everyone, and the only way to notice these minor errors is by intentionally and consciously going over the basics with the intention of finding any errors that have been let slide. What am I repeating wrongly? What am I not doing as well? By eliminating errors from the root levels, you will find it easier to advance to a new level.

It's the same with learning mathematics, we may think we've learned everything we need to know about the basics, but the truth is, we can't always remember everything. We can only get better if we reinforce our learning and check what we've forgotten. And then, you will find it easier to progress to more difficult calculations and advance to the next level of difficulty.

This applies to any skill, whether it's swimming, basketball, or tailoring. Going through the basics intentionally matters, and it's the only way we can stand strong and truly advance to the next level. So don't be afraid to go back to the basics, to reinforce your learning and to check for any errors that may have slipped in. It's the only way to truly master your craft and reach new heights.
