Trade Time for Days: The Four-Day Workweek Debate

Yesterday I slept at 11:00pm only to be up by 3:00am and I haven’t even closed my eyes till then. Now, I’m here at work dozing off every minute and rethinking my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job very much but sometimes it gets really stressful. Maybe it’s because I’m not at the top of the ladder and so I’d have to always be serving others. You know how we always have those bosses who tend to always pile so much work on us. It’s more like they don’t even care about us or if we are tired or not.

Well, these days I always say that the job I’m doing is not for my dad and so once it’s time to close, I’m not going to do any work related stuff but guess what, it’s always a different story at the end of the day. Being a teaching assistant is really not an easy job. After waking up at 3:00am to study ahead of the day, I had to be at work by 7:00am to conduct an exams for some of my students. From there, I had to go to class and afterwards come back to the office to handle some work stuff. Eventually, I’d end up closing from work after 5pm which would leave me very exhausted at the end of the day.

You wouldn’t even believe me if I told you I didn’t have a break time. I go on break when I get the chance to and it’s quite funny but that’s my life. On our busy days, we can stay in the lab with these students from 6:00am to 5:00pm and sometimes we even lose track of time. But what keeps us going is the fact the we are passionate about what we do and so we put in our all. Aside this, I bet no one would even see me at work for ages.😂

I’m starting to love and hate Mondays at the same time because I always get to look forward to going to work and all of that while also getting angry at the fact that I’d be very busy since it’s a Monday. But then, as the days go by it gets better and I start to think I’d be able to get some rest and all of a sudden I feel so exhausted from the previous days.

If you should ask the rich men and women like @merit.ahama you would know working 5 days a week is really not a flex. They are the real flex because they get to have a very flexible work schedule and that’s what I’ve always dreamed of having. I hate to have to always go to work at maybe 6 or 7 am and close late in the evening. Man, I also need to rest. But then, you don’t just wake up from sleep one day and get a life like this. You need to put in the work to achieve such a flexible lifestyle.

For someone who’s still trying to find their feet, working for 5 days a week is really stressful for me as I almost always have to work extra hours. If I’m given the option to work 4 days a week with extra hours I’d obviously hop on the offer because it’s more like what I do every , minus an actual day for me to rest. One minute it’s Friday , you blink twice and it’s Monday. What a life! The weekends move so fast I wonder if someone is always pushing the time. Honestly,I feel I need more that 24 hours a day on weekends.

With the rate at which everyone is busy with work and trying to find money, I feel most of us have lost touch of our actual lives outside of work. We need to spent time with our family, friends and to even rest. It should not always be about work, take enough time out to rest because you actually need it. I prioritize me health so much at this stage in my life and I think 4 working days a week would really do the trick for me.
