It was not a bad experience

I have read and heard a lot of stories about soldiers and police brutality but fortunately for me, I have never been a victim...

I have had an encounter with the police and soldiers only once and it was not bad as people portrayed it...

My first encounter with the police was two years ago, I was with my girlfriend and we were heading back home in the night when suddenly two officers without their uniforms surrounded me and they started asking me questions that sound irritating to the ears, What do I have in my bag, I got furious as I thought they were area boys, I was already exchanging words with them and it seems they were not expecting such reaction from me and they also realize I did not know they were police officers so one of them told me, that was when I look at their cap and saw it was indeed a police cap, hmmm I calm down a bit knowing they were after yahoo boys and since I was not one, I have nothing to fear..

I had to calm my girlfriend down as well because she was also mad at them, they ask me to enter their van and they drove me away from the bike spot a little bit to the front and they started questioning me about what I do for a living, I told them am a blogger, the other two still insist of checking my bag and I showed them, they saw my laptop and ask what I have there, I told them it is my work and I opened it, one of them said he is a freelancer, let him go....

They did not even check my phones cos I was with two phones that day, obviously, they did not check my pocket so they didn't know and I guess that was because of how I spoke to them earlier, they know I am not a yahoo boy and my confidence scares them somehow too, they don't want to harass someone who could be a problem for them if only they know I am nobody...

My encounter with a soldier was brief, it was 7 years ago, I wanted to register for a national card inside the army cantonment at pwd in Lagos, and there was a checkpoint at the main gate, as I got down from the bus, the first scene I witnessed was a soldier slapping a man, hehe this is serious, no idea what transpired between them but that actually took my calmness level to 100 percent from my usual 90 percent cos I am a calm guy....

When it was my turn, I had no problem with the soldier and I was granted entry, it was at the second checkpoint which lead to the office where I wanted to register for the Nin, a soldier man shouted Hey hey I did not know it was me he was talking to but I looked back to know what is going on, and that was when I realized he was talking to me...

He said, don't go and fight there or else you will blame yourself, I told him no o, I just want to register, and he said ok, why would he make that statement? Of course, I know lol... My eyes are always red when I spent too much time outside, it happens unconsciously so yea that kind of makes it look like being angry, so I guess that is what he saw too and probably thinks am angry lol...

That was it, nothing much happened, just the warning and when I was going back he saw me, I greeted him and he also waved so both my experience was not bad...

As for the police, the reason why most people have issues with them is because of how they respond to them, people don't respect police officers and when they stop them, they kind of make that known and police officers are human too, men don't like to be disrespected so when you don't respect them, expect a hostile behavior from them...

If I had continued with my rude approach after knowing they were police officers, even if I am innocent, they won't let me go easily but because I talk to them politely and also show them the evidence they didn't even ask for, I respected them and they love that, and they showed me respect too by letting me go..... Respect is reciprocal.
