Everyone has a different proverb that they use to define their life or speak to them, based on the experience they’ve had or challenges they are currently going through.

When it comes to me, there is a proverb that has stuck with me since 2016 till date. The proverb is, "Every cloud has a silver lining." I'm sure y’all are familiar with it.

I find this proverb to be incredibly helpful because it strengthens the idea that no matter how bad things might seem at the moment, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

I remember how this proverb helped me when I was still in school. In my first and second years in school, I happened to be in the mathematics department. Due to my lack of aptitude for maths, I found it quite difficult to cope in the department.

I always said to myself that I could do it and my key point then was "after all, the people who are studying mathematics as a course or graduated from the department don’t have two heads".

In Year two of the mathematics department, I started thinking of giving up. I mean, I don’t see the point of being somewhere I don’t fit in. Then a friend advised me to apply for an inter-faculty transfer to the department I knew I could fit into. I did, and it worked, but I had to repeat year two again.

At first, I was ashamed of myself. I mean, the fact that I have to redo year two in the new department while my coursemate is already in year three was something that made me feel ashamed of myself.
Then one day, I came across a proverb written on the wall in my friend’s room that says, "Every cloud has a silver lining."

After finding the meaning of the proverb, I realised the truth in the proverb, which since then I’ve held tight to it and also applied to my own life.

In conclusion, this proverb served as guidance for me back then in school and has always kept me motivated till date. So if you're going through a rough time right now, always remember: every cloud has a silver lining!
