¡Hola comunidad! Esta vez traigo para ustedes algunos comentarios da la saga de Los reyes malditos. Los reyes malditos, una saga tipo novela histórica escrita por Maurice Druon y publicada entre 1955 y 1977, comprende 7 volúmenes. Esta saga comienza desde el reinado de Felipe IV de Francia de 1314 y termina con la batalla de Poitiers, uno de los enfrentamientos de la guerra de los cien años entre Francia e Inglaterra. Los 7 volúmenes son los siguientes: 1.El rey de hierro 2.La reina estrangulada 3.Los venenos de la corona 4.La ley de los varones 5.La loba de Francia 6.La flor de lis y el león 7.De como un rey perdió Francia En la nueva edición de la saga, el escritor George Martin (autor de Juego de tronos) hace una introducción enfatizando que los reyes malditos es una saga que lo tiene todo, intriga, venganza, reyes envenados, príncipes débiles y sádicos, reinas estranguladas y una lucha por el poder interminable. George Martin comparte que se inspiró en esta saga para crear su novela Canción de hielo y fuego publicada en 1996.

Resumen

A continuación, haré una breve descripción de lo que trata cada libro: **El rey de hierro:** Todo comienza cuando el rey Felipe IV, de Francia (conocido también como Felipe el hermoso) decide mandar a la hoguera al último líder de los templarios, el maestre Jacobo de Molay. Durante su ejecución, Jacobo maldice a todos los involucrados. A partir de allí se desencadena una serie de eventos desafortunados que van a afectar tanto a la familia del rey como a quien rodea a esta. El rey Felipe IV tiene 4 hijos, Luis, Felipe, Carlos e Isabel. Los príncipes están casados con hijas de la familia Artois, parientes cercanos, y la hija Isabel es la esposa del rey Eduardo I de Inglaterra. Un día la reina Isabel va a Francia a visitar a sus parientes, pero su principal intención con ayuda de su primo Roberto de Artois era acusar a sus cuñadas de la infidelidad hacia sus hermanos. Las cuñadas son inmediatamente encarceladas y despojadas de todos sus beneficios. Tiempo más tarde, el reinado del rey Felipe el hermoso termina y pasa a manos de su primogénito Luis X, el obstinado. **La reina estrangulada:** Esta segunda entrega trata del reinado de Luis X y su preocupación por tener un heredero, ya que debido a la infidelidad de la reina Margarita, la legitimidad de su primogénita, la princesa Juana, queda puesta en duda. Las preocupaciones de Luis se centran en encontrar una nueva esposa que le dé un heredero y anular su matrimonio con Margarita, por tal motivo descuida sus principales deberes como rey y la nación que algún día fue próspera se empieza a ir en picada. **Los venenos de la corona:** Continúa el reinado de Luis X, demostrando ser un rey cada vez peor, sin embargo, consigue una nueva esposa (Clemencia de Hungría) y a su tan deseado heredero (Juan I, el póstumo) lamentablemente las cosas no terminan tan bien para Luis por ser un rey débil y su reinado pronto pasa a manos de su hermano Felipe, el Largo. **La ley de los varones:** El rey Felipe V, es considerado como un rey bueno y tiene aptitudes para gobernar, sin embargo, en su afán porque el reino pasara a sus manos, instaura una ley en la que las mujeres ya no pueden gobernar el trono de Francia. Por unos años, Francia es un país próspero como en los tiempos del reinado de su padre. **La loba de Francia:** Isabel de Francia, al verse amenazada por los favoritos del rey, su esposo Eduardo I, decide ir a pedir asilo a su hermano Carlos IV, allí se encuentra con Roger Mortimer, un traidor del reinado de Inglaterra. Con la ayuda de Mortimer, Isabel vuelve a Inglaterra y destronan al rey Eduardo I. Como Eduardo II es muy joven para gobernar, Isabel se convierte en la reina regente y todo el reino entra bajo a influencia de su amante Mortimer. Mientras tanto, en Francia, el rey Carlos IV es continuamente influenciado por la familia Valois quienes son los que en realidad están gobernando Francia. **La flor de lis y el león:** Una vez Eduardo II se convierte en el rey de Inglaterra y después de la muerte de su tío Carlos IV, decide reclamar su lugar como rey de Francia, ya que es el siguiente en la línea de sucesión de los Capeto. Sin embargo, el reino de Francia ha pasado a manos de los Valois y es Felipe VI de Valois quien se encuentra en el trono. Esto se convierte en uno de los múltiples factores que llevan a Inglaterra a declarar la guerra a Francia y se convierte en una guerra de 116 años. **De como un rey perdió Francia:** Continúa la guerra de los cien años entre Francia e Inglaterra, la disputa ha pasado a manos de los hijos y Eduardo III, conocido como el príncipe negro, se enfrenta en batalla a Juan II de Francia.

Personajes

Aunque parece que los personajes transcendentales son los reyes, estos casi no duran con vida, debido a las mismas intrigas y disputas entre familia, por guerras o por enfermedades de la época. Sin embargo, a lo largo de la saga hay personajes que perduran, entre ellos: **Roberto de Artois:** Es el primo de los Capeto, enamorado de su prima Isabel, por lo que al principio hace muchas cosas por ella. Es una persona que siempre se pone del lado de quien le conviene. Su principal disputa era con su tía, la condesa Mahaut, madre de las reinas inculpadas por infidelidad, su molestia es principalmente porque su tía le quito el condado de Artois que pertenecía a él por derecho. Durante toda la saga busca la forma de deshacerse de la condesa y quedarse con el condado, todo a través de intrigas y venganzas. **Carlos de Valois:** Es el hermano del rey Felipe el hermoso, siempre quiso ser rey, pero nunca logro llegar a algo más allá de reinar a través de sus sobrinos. Aunque parece que no tiene mucho protagonismo, siempre se encuentra aconsejando y tomando decisiones importantes. **Condesa Mahaut:** Es la madre de Juana y Blanca y tía de Margarita (las reinas destronadas), es una persona mala y siempre está metiéndose en donde no la llaman, hace todo lo posible por defender su territorio. Lamentablemente, las cosas no terminan bien para ella y se convierte en víctima de su propio invento.

Comentarios

Del libro 1 al 6, todos van contando en tercera persona, mientras que el último libro es una serie de cartas del cardenal Peridot dirigidas a su sobrino Archambaud, en el que relata los sucesos que llevan al rey Juan II a continuar la guerra en contra de los ingleses. En particular, me gustó la forma en la narración de los primeros libros, pero no quede muy convencida con el último porque, aunque la información era excelente y los eventos bien narrados, era un poco aburrido leer todos los sucesos a través de las cartas de este cardenal. Por otra parte, debo mencionar que alterno a la historia de los reyes malditos, el autor desarrolla el relato de amor y drama con personajes literarios, los cuales involucra a Guccio Baglioni y a María Cressay, quienes tienen dificultades para estar juntos. Su historia empezó siendo muy central en cada uno de los libros, pero a medida que avanzaba la historia sentí que estos personajes fueron olvidados y no se les dio un final adecuado. Sin embargo, tienen un papel relevante que los lleva a formar un vínculo con el rey Juan I, el póstumo, el niño que dura 5 días vivo, hijo de Clemencia de Hungría y Luis X. En general es una saga fantástica, pero los métodos para obtener el poder y las riquezas terminaban siendo crueles. La historia no ha cambiado a lo largo de los siglos, aunque seamos personas un poco más civilizadas, siempre habrá quienes estén tras el poder, tras conseguir lo que desean sin importar por encina de quien pasen y quieres, vivan felices generando intrigas y suspenso.

However, he manages to secure a new wife (Clemence of Hungary) and his long-awaited heir (John I, the Posthumous). Unfortunately, things don't end well for Louis, as he is a weak king, and his reign soon passes into the hands of his brother Philip the Tall. **The Law of Men:** King Philip V is considered a good king with the aptitude to rule. However, in his eagerness to ensure the kingdom passes into his hands, he establishes a law that prohibits women from ruling the throne of France. For some years, France thrives, much like in the days of his father's reign. **The She Wolf:** When threatened by the favorites of her husband Edward I, Isabella of France seeks asylum with her brother Charles IV. There, she encounters Roger Mortimer, a traitor from the English reign. With Mortimer's help, Isabella returns to England and dethrones King Edward I. As Edward II is too young to rule, Isabella becomes the queen regent, and the entire kingdom falls under the influence of her lover Mortimer. Meanwhile, in France, King Charles IV is continuously influenced by the Valois family, who are the ones truly governing France. **The Lily and the Lion:** Once Edward II becomes the King of England, and after the death of his uncle Charles IV, he decides to claim his place as the King of France, as he is next in the line of succession of the Capetians. However, the Kingdom of France has fallen into the hands of the Valois, and it is Philip VI of Valois who sits on the throne. This becomes one of the many factors that lead England to declare war on France, marking the beginning of a 116-year war. **The King Without a Kingdom:** The Hundred Years' War between France and England continues, and the dispute has passed into the hands of the sons. Edward III, known as the Black Prince, battles against John II of France. Characters Although it seems that the central characters are the kings, they hardly survive for long due to the same intrigues and family disputes, wars, or illnesses of the time. However, throughout the saga, there are characters who play pivotal roles. **Robert of Artois:** He is a cousin of the Capetians and deeply in love with his cousin Isabella. At the outset, he does many things for her. He is someone who always sides with whoever benefits him. His main conflict is with his aunt, Countess Mahaut, the mother of the queens accused of infidelity. His primary grievance is that his aunt took away the County of Artois, which rightfully belonged to him. Throughout the saga, he seeks ways to get rid of the countess and claim the county for himself, all through intrigues and acts of revenge. **Charles of Valois:** He is the brother of King Philip the Fair and always aspired to be king but never managed to attain anything beyond reigning through his nephews. Although it may seem that he doesn't have a prominent role, he is always there advising and making important decisions. **Countess Mahaut:** She is the mother of Joan and Blanche and the aunt of Margaret (the dethroned queens). She is a malevolent person who always interferes where she's not wanted, doing everything in her power to defend her territory. Unfortunately, things don't end well for her, and she becomes a victim of her own devices. Coments From the first book to the sixth, the narrative is told in the third person, while the final book consists of a series of letters from Cardinal Peridot addressed to his nephew Archambaud. In these letters, the cardinal recounts the events that lead King John II to continue the war against the English. I particularly enjoyed the narrative style in the earlier books, but I wasn't entirely convinced by the last one. Although the information was excellent and the events well described, it became somewhat tedious to experience all the happenings through the letters of this cardinal. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that alongside the story of "The Accursed Kings," the author develops a tale of love and drama involving literary characters, Guccio Baglioni and Maria Cressay, who face difficulties in being together. Their story was initially central in each of the books, but as the narrative progressed, I felt that these characters were somewhat forgotten, and they didn't receive a proper conclusion. However, they play a significant role that connects them with King John I, the Posthumous, the child who only lives for 5 days, born to Clemence of Hungary and Louis X. In general, it's a fantastic saga, but the methods used to gain power and wealth often turned out to be cruel. History hasn't changed over the centuries. Even though we may consider ourselves more civilized, there will always be those who pursue power and their desires at any cost, regardless of whom they hurt, and they will live happily creating intrigue and suspense.
