Fungi Friday - Finds of the Week

Here are a few more fungi finds for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

I've been keeping an eye on the polypore that is growing in the middle of downtown Chicago. It appears to be a type of ganoderma and possibly Ganoderma tsugae as you can see it becoming lacquered and smooth. Once it finishes drying out I should be able to see what type of ganoderma it might be.

For reference here is where it is growing amongst the tall skyscrapers. Poor tree probably has root rot and that is why the ganoderma is able to infest it. I suspect they will have to cut it down eventually.

Out in the forests many different mushrooms were growing. Here's a nice little red russula emetica.

Here is a bolete getting attacked by bolete killer aka Hypomyces chrysospermus. I wonder what bolete species is growing under all that fungi? Maybe its a bicolor.

The puffballs are starting to show up for fall. This little guy is a Apioperdon pyriforme.

Here are some even smaller ones. Eventually they are going to be growing all over the place and fortunately they are edible. They are really good pan fried with potatoes.

I found a tiny little white mushroom growing in some mulch. I'm guessing it is a meadow mushroom.

Farther down the path I found some of the same mushrooms in various stages of growth. They are definitely meadow mushrooms.

The gills start out pink then start turning brown and as they get even older the gills become really dark. These are an edible mushroom but be wary of harvesting white mushrooms as there are many different deadly species that have similar features.

Here's a really old one. Typically I like to harvest these when they are growing in a wild field (not chemical laden mulch). Also I like to harvest them when their gills are still pink.

Here is some really young false turkeytail aka Stereum ostrea. Eventually they will bloom out more and start turning from orange to brown and green and sometimes even some other strange colors.

That's all for now, thanks for looking and happy #fungifriday
