A One Way Trip To Paradise?

Copy of Nowhere To Run.jpg

I loved this new world, so full of color and fun! It didn't hurt that I could change into any animal that I could imagine!

Still, I was curious to find out if going home was an option. I didn't think I would go through with it, but it would be nice to know that I had a choice. I had a new girlfriend and my father, but no other close ties.

It was funny how a few short days had changed my mind from "having" to find a way back to wondering if I really wanted to go back at all. I had thought I was happy, but compared to whatever this is, I was just existing.

I changed into my human form, finding it novel to be a man again. My favorite form is currently a pigeon.

Leaving the park where I had first met the inhabitants of the massive city, I walked towards the center of town. I passed shops of every description. The sidewalks were full of people and animals. A tiger was peering into the window of a jewelry shop, and nobody even batted an eye!

The people mostly spoke English, and the speech was friendly and relaxed. I asked about a library, and was directed to a large building, made of marble. I went in, and found the librarian.

"Hello Sir, where are the history books, please?"

"Ah, you must be new here?" he asked, smiling.

"Yes, I just got here a few days ago. How did you know?"

"Because we can't really call it history if we can remember it, now can we? You see, we don't seem to be aging here, at least not the way it happens on other worlds. Our telomeres never get shorter, and in some cases actually lengthen."

"Is there any way to return to our own world if we choose?"

"Yes but it would be a one way trip, if our scientists are correct. You would never be able to pass through this specific portal again, it would push you back, sort of like trying to run into a rubber wall."

"I'm not in any hurry to leave. Exactly where am I?"

"It's more of a where and when. We have people dropping in from all eras, and they arrive in different places. Invariably all decide to stay and build new lives rather than risk not being able to come back. We have turned this world into a sort of paradise, where each person is able to follow their own interests and use their talents."

"I look forward to exploring it!" I said, smiling.
