Los Angeles, California is probably one of the worst places somebody would want to be when the zombie apocalypse begins, but for the Manawa's and the Clarks, a blended family dealing with their own and each other's luggage, find themselves right in the middle of the second largest city in the United States during the end of the world. Los Angeles has 8,495 people per square mile, that's a possible 8,495 zombies per square mile for over 503 miles! It'd be pretty tough to not see a walker roaming around if you were there.
The pilot episode starts off with a bit of action then slows down while the living deal with their day to day problems before the inevitable happens, the undead try to eat their faces. It's the official first day of the zombie apocalypse and few people seem to even notice at first. Most who hear rumors of it ignore it. Eventually for the Manawa's and Clarks, shit catches up to them and they have to survive. It may start slow for some but the shit is clearly hitting the fan while Madison Clark and Travis Manawa try to deal with their teenage kids. One, Alicia Clark, in the middle of high school angst, another, Nick Clark, addicted to heroin and no one believes he saw his girlfriend eating someone, and Chris Manawa, who is resentful of his father. These are all petty problems compared to zombies trying to chase you down and civilization collapses.
As night falls so does the city. Traffic has begun to get bad, even for LA, and the dead rise up. The next morning a video is leaked of helicopter footage showing an person being coming back from the dead and attacking someone. People are starting to notice things around them are off. Madison begins to notice as well and begins to round up the family, but Nick has more important things to do, he needs to get his figure out what he thinks his dealer gave him to give him "hallucinations". This only fuels the dealer's paranoia and he attempts to kill Nick. A pistol is pulled and Nick is able to twist the gun around and accidentally kills his dealer, who becomes the first of many walker's Madison and Travis see.
