My entry:
This is a film photo that I took 20 years ago of the parched and WILTED plants growing in front of one of the tower houses in the Mani Peninsula in southern Greece.
It’s turbulent history led to this distinctive architecture of FORTRESS like houses during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922
The view from the top of the tower would allow a sentry to give ample warning of hostile approach.
Maniots were fierce warriors who resisted Turkish domination.
It was a brutal period of history where capture could mean hands and feet being cut off before being hung.
The fighters observed a battle ritual when any of their fellow warriors were seriously wounded in a battle and could not be carried away, he was kissed goodby by everyone and then they cut off his head. It was thought a great dishonour to have the Turks bear away one’s head.
It is no wonder that the Mani acquired a reputation for fiercely defending their land against the Turks and had a drinking toast to “the good bullet” – the one that killed you outright.
I have read that it may be from the people of the Mani that we get our word maniacs
My key word is TOWER
