Having Dinner

I was invited to my neighbor's to have dinner. He is a military officer. He has a network in his area. He invites his network to have dinner too.

In Indonesia, the lowest military informant is called Babinsa. Babinsa is in charge of a certain area. It is around 5 to 10 villages. He builds networks on the ground with public figures, low level government officials, and leaders of mass organizations. The networks are voluntary partners. They will detect an early threat to security.

The Babinsa official will treat his networks well because they are not paid. Inviting them to have dinner is part of building a relationship.
Babinsa is a very effective defense system that has been used for a long time. The Babinsa officials will live together with civilians. They will do some activities, help government health departments with caring for people and vaccinations. Sometimes, they also help poor people for a donation. They will ask the rich ones to help the poor.

The close relationship between civilians and Babinsa officials will build trust in the Indonesian military organization in general. In many cases, Indonesian military institutions are closer to civilians than police institutions. The police department earns a bad reputation because of the bad deeds of a few police officers who like to charge riders, or drivers on the street for breaking traffic rules. Practising the traffic rules is good for security and safety, but a few police officers charge people who break the rules on the street for their own profit. They accept bribes on the street. It is like a common secret for Indonesian people. That is one reason why some Indonesian people do not respect the police institution too much.

It is different from military institutions. The military officers also treat the demonstrators warmly and humanely. On the other hand, police officers often treat demonstrators with tear gas and sticks.
