In 2012 I was in Chile. The reason for the trip was the realization of the pilot chapter of a documentary series that we wanted to make between some friends. Apart from everything we lived through making that pilot chapter, an experience that I will never forget and that is a topic for other posts, we also had to live the protests that were taking place in the country by high school students because the government wanted to privatize all the education centers at that level.
En el 2012 yo estuve en Chile. Las razón del viaje fue la realización del programa piloto de una serie documental que queríamos hacer entre varios amigos. Aparte de todo lo que vivimos realizando ese primer capitulo, experiencia que nunca olvidaré y que es tema para otros posts, nos tocó vivir también las protestas que estaban llevando a cabo en el país los estudiantes de escuelas secundaria porque el gobierno quería privatizar toda la educación de ese nivel.
While we were in the middle of the editing process of this pilot documentary, which we were doing in the city of Santiago de Chile, a friend told us that there was going to be a demonstration in a park in the center of the city and we went there with the cameras in the hand. We wanted to take pictures and video of the protest so we could report on it in one of our future chapters in the series.
Ya estando en medio del proceso de edición de este primer documental, el cual estábamos haciendo en la ciudad de Santiago de Chile, un amigo nos cuenta que iba a haber una demostración en un parque en el centro de la ciudad y para allá nos fuimos con las cámaras en la mano. Queríamos tomar fotografías y videos de la protesta para poder reportar acerca de las mismas en uno de nuestros futuros capítulos en la serie.
When we arrived I really could not believe what I was seeing as it was a very unusual situation for me. Students from a high school had taken over the high school and locked themselves in and the police were trying to force them out. It looked like a scene from a war movie with all the smoke from the burning tires, added to the smoke and the sound of tear gas exploding and stones flying.
Cuando llegamos yo realmente no podía creer lo que estaba viendo pues era una situación muy inusual para mi. Los estudiantes de una secundaria habían tomado la misma y se habían encerrado en ella y la policía los estaba tratando de sacar por la fuerza. Parecía una escena de película sobre la guerra con todo el humo de las gomas quemadas, sumado al humo y el sonido de los gases lacrimógenos explotando y las piedras volando.
Some of the students threw stones and latex gloves filled with paint at the police cars. The police responded with tear gas and pressurized water. This water, although the police claimed it did not, contained chemicals and was also mixed with sewage. It fell on me and I spent several days with a lot of irritation in the area where it fell.
Algunos de los estudiantes tiraban piedras y guantes de látex rellenos de pinturas a los autos de policía. La policía respondía con los gases lacrimógenos y el agua a presión. Esta agua, aunque la policía aseguraba que no, tenía químicos y estaba ademas mezclada con aguas albañales. A mi me cayó arriba y me pase varios días con mucha irritación en la zona donde cayó.
And that's without counting the gas. I had already experienced the action of tear gas in the Military Service, M.S. in Cuba is obligatory, but not like this, as it happened to me there. At one point I had to go out of the park to a side street to get some air because I could hardly breathe, much less see.
Y eso sin contar el gas. Ya yo había experimentado la acción del gas lacrimógeno en el Servicio Militar, en Cuba es obligatorio, pero no así de esta manera como me pasó ahí. En un momento me tuve que salir fuera del parque a una calle lateral a coger aire pues casi ni podía respirar y mucho menos podía ver.
I think the pictures speak for themselves how chaotic and surreal the whole scene was. Most of the action was happening in front of the school where there was a huge park. But the craziest thing of all was to see that 100 meters away people were acting as if nothing was happening. We were in the very center of the city! Nobody reacted, as if it was nothing to do with them. It was something that really shocked me. Seeing 13-15 year old kids in my country fighting with the police would have been something that would have made me react immediately. Over there it seemed like it was normal.
Creo que las fotos hablan por si solas de cuan caótica y surreal era todo la escena. La mayor parte de la acción ocurría al frente de la escuela donde había un enorme parque. Pero lo más loco de todo era ver que a 100 metros de distancia la gente actuaba como si no pasara nada. Estábamos en el mismo centro de la ciudad! Nadie reaccionaba, como si eso no fuera algo que tuviera que ver con ellos. Fue algo que me chocó mucho. Ver a niños de 13-15 años de edad en mi país pelearse con la policía hubiera sido algo que me hubiera hecho reaccionar de inmediato. Allí parecía que era normal.

Hay algunas imágenes en video en los títulos finales del capitulo piloto de la serie. Por cierto, la serie documental nunca se hizo aunque mis amigos y yo después seguimos trabajando en otro proyectos. Bueno, como decía, hay algunas imágenes en video y se me puede ver. Yo soy uno que anda con una cámara de fotos en medio de todo el humo. Tatuaje y camiseta corta negra. Son imágenes muy rápidas pero bastante gráficas de como era la situación reinante.
