The largest galaxy discovered.

The largest galaxy discovered.

A team of researchers led by astronomer Martijn Oei from the Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands has discovered the largest galaxy in the known universe.

It is located about 3 billion light years away and is a staggering 16.3 million light years in diameter, it is a beast that is 81 and a half times the size of our Milky Way galaxy.

The team of researchers made this finding using LOFAR, an interferometric network consisting of around 20,000 radio antennas distributed in 52 locations across Europe.

This would be a radio galaxy, which are giant structures with a host galaxy in the center and colossal lobes and jets of energy and particles that spring from the galactic center, which, when interacting with the intergalactic medium, act as a synchrotron to accelerate the electrons that they produce the radio emissions that are ultimately detected by radio astronomers.

The energy jets are surely produced by a supermassive black hole that is active in the galactic center, understanding as active that it is devouring matter in large quantities.

Scientists try to understand the host galaxy, which is a fairly normal elliptical type, since it has about 240 billion times the mass of the sun, which is not so normal anymore, it is the supermassive black hole that is in the center and which is estimated to have a mass of around 400 million times the mass of the sun, is another colossal cosmic figure, because that is 154 times larger than the supermassive black hole that is at the center of our milky way .
