A Brief Update About Tunisia

A week has passed since the president's decision of taking over all the power in the country.

He really had support from a big part of the people at first. But with time, some started to rethink.

The decisions he's taking are making us more suspicious every day. HE claimed that he's doing the whole thing to get the country through the economical situation and through the crisis with Covid-19. But so far the nothing is changing. He said he's doing it to fight corruption and everyone who's involved with it. But so far he's arresting politicians who are opposing him and his decisions.

He said it'll only take 30 days to do all that and then he'll give the power back to the parliament. Now more than a week has passed and he's nowhere closer to his goals. He will probably be delaying that. I mean, who can say no to him now that he's ruling with the power of the army?

He said he'll choose a prime minister and allow him to make a new government. So far he's taking over the position and assigning the ministers himself, starting with defense, justice, and interior, which is no good sign because it gives him more control over the armed forces and over the courts.

All in all, I am scared of what he can do with all the power he gave himself. Although, in his speeches, and in his own mind, he's the best president ever, and he came to save us all, and he believes deeply in democracy and freedom... but his words and his deeds don't match, making him the most dangerous kind of ruler.

I still believe in the Tunisian democracy and that the rest of the political actors will come up with a compromise to deal with this threat. Hopefully sooner than later. Because dictatorship is not made for us.
