Empedocles

Today I'm going to cover Empedocles in my series of philosopher introductions.
Pluralists are the fourth and last period of pre-Socratic natural philosophy. I will introduce Empedocles, the representative of this period, under five headings. These titles are as follows.

  1. His life and works
  2. The four-element theory
  3. Concepts of love and hate
  4. Religious theory
  5. Biological explanations

  1. His Life and Works

He is the first important representative of the 4 periods of pre-Socratic natural philosophy, namely the pluralists. Empedocles, who lived (492-432 BC), is said to have come from an aristocratic family.
Although he gave many works, it is accepted that he has 2 main works. The first of these is his work "On Nature". In this work he develops a materialistic philosophy of prayer. His second work is "Purifications" in which he includes his religious ideas such as the immortality of the soul, prenatal existence and transmigration.
Empedocles draws attention with his versatile personality in this second work. In this second work, he is described as a divine figure, a seer, healer, and savior. In addition to his philosopher identity, he has a skillful personality that solves problems that people cannot solve, as a physician, sometimes as a magician or magician.
Empedocles, also described as a physician, prevented the growth of the plague epidemic that ravaged the town of Salinento, and managed to prevent it by drying the swamps surrounding the town.

Despite his aristocratic background, he was an advocate of democracy, strongly opposed to oligarchy and tyranny.

He is one of the rare Greek thinkers who embraced and defended democracy. It is said that Empedocles took part in and led the democratic party, one of the political parties that formed after the collapse of the tyranny, and spent all his wealth for this party.
Empedocles, like other natural philosophers before him, accepts that nothing comes out of nothing, and that what really exists cannot eventually perish. He, like the philosophers of Nature before him, claimed that the eternal being is in the form of matter. Like Parmenides, the room rejects the concept of empty space. He adopts the view of the Elean school, which suggests that a multitude cannot emerge from unity.

  1. The Four Element Theory

It can be said that Empedocles was highly influenced by two philosophers in terms of his philosophical view. One of these philosophers is Pythagoras and the other is Parmenides.

Inspired by the archhes of the Eleans for the first matter, which is the substance of existence, he asserts that there are four Elements at the base of everything.
These four Elements are the constants designated as Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. He suggested that the talk and change in the universe, these 4 elements, took place in Samsun.
Just as air cannot become soil, it cannot become air in soil. In that case, the 4 root substances are unchangeable, and with their mixtures in various proportions, they form the sensory beings that we show as "this and that" concrete and compound objects in the world.
According to Empedocles, these 4 root items that really exist in his teaching form the category of reality. Objects in change resulting from their mixture occur in the field of appearances.
Earth is still Water and Fire called God by Empedocles. They were not created according to Empedocles but have always existed. Earth, air, Water and Fire are secondarily simple elements or substances. The reason they are simple is that everything in the universe has come from them.
Uncreated and Indestructible, that is, eternal, qualitatively unchanging, it is completely homogeneous. Although these 4 elements are unchanging in the sense of remaining one and the same with themselves, they exhibit a movement of displacement. They occur as a result of displacement movements within the organizer. Keep in mind that the term earth is generally used for solid, the term water for various liquids and metals, and the term air for gases.
Fire was added later as 4 items, expressing these three states of matter.

  1. Dört Öğe Teorisi

Empedokles'in felsefi görüşü bakımından 2 filozoftan oldukça etkilendiği söylenilebilir.

  1. Love and Hate

Empedocles spoke of the two separate narrowness of the four elements as love and hate as the cause of merging and separating from each other.
The most important difference between the 4 root substances and the 2 forces called love and hate, which are responsible for their union and separation, are where the first ones are passive but eternal, the concepts of love and hate are active and they are the ruling powers in turn.
While explaining these two concepts, namely love and hate, Empodecles interpreted not only as physical forces but also as psychological and moral principles.
According to Empedocles, while Love represents goodness in the universe, hate represents evil. That is, Love is the cause of goodness in the universe and hate is the cause of evil. As can be understood from the metaphysics of Empedocles, 6 basic factors have also occurred, four of them are passive and two are active. Empedocles tried to explain the history of the universe with the forces of love and hate within a cyclical history design.

. Religious Views

Empedocles, reflecting from the view of love and hate representing good and evil, argues that man consists of two elements such as soul and body, of which the body is mortal, the soul is the immortal component of man. Empedocles approaches the soul both scientifically and spiritually.
He regards man as an immortal spirit exiled to earth with a sin caused by hatred.
There is a state of exile here. This state of exile has condemned the soul to the transmigration of human beings, animals and plants.
Getting rid of this transmigration and attaining absolute immortality is only possible with spiritual purification.
Along with having a philosophical understanding, the soul finds itself in the most important way of purification.
In addition, the soul should strive to memorialize love by planting seeds of love among human beings who have entered into a moral struggle.

5.Biological Descriptions

One of the most outstanding examples of the biological explanations of empodexes is his explanation and interpretation of the phenomenon of respiration.
According to him, the air outside can penetrate the human body only when the Kaan, which has spread up to its surface, is drawn from the skin and flows into the internal organs.
As love continues to mix things up, these parts join together in a completely random fashion, and as a result of these combinations and the accidental addition of organs to each other, human-headed oxen, ox-headed people, double-faced, double-breasted beings, and all kinds of strange animals have emerged. What ensures the survival of organs is possible by cooperating with other organs and meeting the needs of the other.
