Is God "evil" in the Old Testament? — ¿Dios es "malvado" en el Antiguo Testamento?

The Old Testament is known for various tales that might seem grim or bizarre. Many atheists or people who do not sympathize with religion often point this out, since it is assumed that if the Bible is a holy book, then its writings should be an example to follow. However, what we see there sometimes seems to be taken from an apocalyptic movie, where bad things happen to people, and there are people doing bad things.

However, it seems to me that everything depends on the interpretation given to it. If we read it literally, it seems that God is a being that rewards or punishes you without mercy. However, the interesting thing about the Bible is that it admits many levels of interpretation, depending on the person who reads it.

I could consider myself a Deist, that is, I believe in God but do not identify with any religion. However, I consider the Bible to be a holy book, not because the church says so, but because it contains wisdom that is independent of the religious stance of whoever reads it.

Sodom and Gomorrah. The Universal Flood. The binding of Isaac. Why does God command or order these punishments to people? The answer, from a deeper level of interpretation, is that it is not God who does it, but the people or society itself.

If we look at God, not as a humanized being who gets angry, but as a kind of "divine system", then everything makes more sense. Thus, when an individual, or a group of people, start to "misuse" this "system", then bad consequences happen.

Sodoma y Gomorra.

The Flood generation, as well as the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, as far as I understand, were not very well behaved people. Societies that were very immature or where doing bad things was normalized. They had orgies, parties, and sought to satisfy every desire of the body without control. It is obvious that these types of societies end up destroying themselves, and only those who behaved well, those that God or the "system" saw as worthy, survive.

This is very metaphorical, the floods or rains of fire are ways of representing the way in which these societies that go the wrong way are destroyed. This looks very fantastic or far away, but perhaps it happens all the time, every time a country goes through a crisis or difficult situation, perhaps the population should meditate on what they failed in. All this chaos denotes a certain level of immaturity, and that is what I think the Old Testament seeks to represent.

Similar interpretations could be made of other grim Old Testament stories, for example, in the binding of Isaac, where his father, Abraham, represents love or altruism, and his son Isaac represents judgment or selfish desire. It is not about killing your son because God commands it, but when you are willing to "kill" your selfish desire on behalf of love, then that is how the life of both is preserved.

This all sounds very trite, but the Bible is too complex, elaborate and impressive a book to be just a fantastic, literal account. It was written 2000 years ago, when very few people knew how to read and write, and not by just anyone but by sages with a high level of knowledge.
