Myoga is one of my favorite Japanese summer vegetables ... or precisely the part I eat is its flower buds. It has unique refreshing gingery taste (It's called Japanese ginger in German language). I cannot describe the taste with other herbs and spices. Myoga is Myoga.
I put it on noodles, buddha bowl, fried rice and veggies etc etc. I cannot miss it in summer time.
As I have never seen Myoga flower buds sold in Germany, I grow Myoga by myself. Luckily some German seed and nursery stores have Myoga. I bought two pots two years ago from Rühlemann.

Myoga likes shady place, doesn't mind heavy wet soil, and doesn't need much maintenance. It's easy to grow ....... in Japan 😅We have to be careful about one thing in a cold climate such as in Germany: don't let Myoga roots frozen in soil!
So I dig them out, pack them in a paper bag with some straw and store the bag in the Basement in the winter time.
I was too lazy to do this work this autumn ... I wished Myoga roots are fine. Luckily the planters were under balcony roof. Rain didn't fall on them. It seems the roots weren't frozen and fine.
I look forward to having them in my garden in spring and taste them in summer 😁
茗荷のない夏なんて考えられないくらい茗荷が大好きです・・・が、ドイツでは売っていません。なので2年前から育てています。
茗荷は日当たりが悪いジメジメしたところで育って、メンテナンスいらずと日本では言われていて、ドイツでも確かにあまりメンテナンスはいらないのですが、冬に根っこを凍らせないように注意しなければいけません。
今年は特に雪が多くて、危ないなと思いつつ、根っこを掘り起こす作業をサボっていました。幸いプランターはベランダの屋根のあるところに置いてあったので、雨水で濡れて凍ることなく、根っこは無事でした。
藁で包んで紙袋に入れて、緩衝材を入れた段ボールに入れて、無事今日地下室に保存できました。これで一安心。
春に植えつけて、夏に茗荷を食べるのが今から楽しみです。
