Hey que tal de nuevo amigos, saben que había una cosa que quería comentarles pero no había tenido la oportunidad ni el momento indicado, pero ahora por fin ha llegado la temporada de caza y todo se ha equilibrado para poder hacer un post sobre esto. Así como en USA hay temporadas de caza para los patos silvestres, temporada de caza para los cocodrilos en los pantanos, por fin llego la temporada de caza de conejos y algunas aves que llegan al campo donde vive mi familia.
Normalmente mi papá solía cazar de joven, incluso yo lo había acompañado de día, o de noche con sus amigos, la semana de visita a mi familia por fin pude ir de casería nocturna con mis primos y con mi padre, y aunque solo fui a alumbrar con la linterna, es la primera vez que hago algo parecido y veo este método de caza.
Hey how about it again friends, you know there was one thing I wanted to tell you but I hadn't had the chance or the time, but now the hunting season has finally arrived and everything has been balanced out to be able to make a post about this. Just as in the USA there are hunting seasons for wild ducks, hunting season for crocodiles in the swamps, finally the hunting season has arrived for rabbits and some birds that come to the countryside where my family lives.
Normally my father used to hunt when he was young, even I had accompanied him during the day, or at night with his friends. During the week I visited my family, I was finally able to go hunting at night with my cousins and my father, and although I only went to give birth with the flashlight, it is the first time that I do something similar and see this method of hunting.
Nos trasladamos en camioneta por la carretera por 30 min, a los sitios de caza y donde anidan las aves, aquí dejamos nuestro vehículo en la quebrada y comenzamos a caminar por la orilla, alumbrando los arboles y ramas caídas, buscando algunos nidos o para ver directamente a las aves en las copas. Y lamentablemente no se ve muy bien el sitio, pero solo quiero que vean que estaba completamente oscuro, no había luna ni estrellas, simplemente teníamos la luz de las linternas para ver el camino.
We move by truck along the road for 30 minutes, to the hunting sites and where the birds nest, here we leave our vehicle in the ravine and start walking along the shore, lighting the trees and fallen branches, looking for some nests or to see directly the birds in the canopy. And unfortunately you can't see the site very well, but I just want you to see that it was completely dark, there was no moon or stars, we just had the light of the flashlights to see the road.
Al acercarnos a los arboles debíamos alumbrar bien con las linternas para ver que aves habían en esta zona, así sabríamos si debíamos caminar mas o si alguna de ellas era la que podíamos cazar. En un principio no había nada, algunas palomas que conocemos como "Carboneras" por que tienen puntos negros en el cuerpo, y otras que conocemos como "palomas santa cruz" cuyo nombre científico es Columbina squammata ridgwagyi, o también la conocen como Palomita maraquita, estas aves son muy pequeñas abundan en la zona pero es una maldad cazarlas, así que no las tocamos, también vimos algunos loros, turpiales y otros tipos.
When we approached the trees we had to shine our flashlights to see what birds were in this area, so we would know if we had to walk more or if any of them was the one we could hunt. In the beginning there was nothing, some doves we know as "Carboneras" because they have black spots on their bodies, and others we know as "palomita santa cruz" whose scientific name is Columbina squammata ridgwagyi, or also known as Palomita maraquita, these birds are very small and abundant in the area but it is a bad thing to hunt them, so we did not touch them, we also saw some parrots, turpials and other types.
Luego de caminar varios kilómetros y unos cuantos minutos, llegamos al sitio exacto donde estaban comenzando a anidar, allí comenzamos a revisar todas las copas de los arboles, si veíamos algunas palomas en nidos no las tocábamos, si estaban sobre las ramas estas si podíamos cazarlas, ya que las que estaban en nidos ya tenían huevos puestos.
After walking several kilometers and a few minutes, we arrived at the exact place where they were beginning to nest, there we began to check all the treetops, if we saw some doves in nests we did not touch them, if they were on the branches these if we could hunt them, since those that were in nests already had eggs laid.
La herramienta de caza no es un rifle o un arco y flecha, es algo mas sencillo, una resortera o "fonda" como nosotros la conocemos, en las manos indicadas y con la precisión exacta puede ser mas letal que un rifle, y esto aplica para conejos o animales un poco mas grandes. Esta pequeña herramienta que es básicamente una rama gruesa con forma de Y con una liga y un cuero para sostener rocas es con lo que todos cazan aquí de forma tradicional y la verdad es que no entiendo como hacen para ser tan precisos, pero con una sola roca pueden tumbar las aves desde lo alto o cazar conejos.
The hunting tool is not a rifle or a bow and arrow, it is something simpler, a slingshot or "fonda" as we know it, in the right hands and with the exact precision it can be more lethal than a rifle, and this applies to rabbits or slightly larger animals. This small tool that is basically a thick Y-shaped branch with a rubber band and a leather to hold rocks is what everyone hunts with here in a traditional way and the truth is that I don't understand how they can be so precise, but with just one rock they can shoot birds from above or hunt rabbits.
Las aves que cazamos se conocen en este lugar como "tijuas", aunque no estoy seguro si es la misma Paloma Arroyera (Leptotila verreauxi) que muchos conocen en otros países, tambien hay otra ave que se llama Paloma de collar Turca (Streptopelia decaocto), ambas son las aves que cazamos por que comienzan a anidar en esta época, cuando comienza a llover poco, las aves llegan a lo alto de los arboles en las montañas y comienzan a anidar. Nosotros simplemente cazamos una pocas, quizás 8 entre ambas especies, con eso bastaba para todos, y no somos depredadores del ambiente, aunque estén en temporada, no es bueno matar tantos de estos animales, hay personas que en una noche se llevan mas de 50.
The birds that we hunt are known in this place as "tijuas", although I am not sure if it is the same Arroyera Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) that many know in other countries, there is also another bird that is called Turkish Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), both are the birds that we hunt because they begin to nest at this time, when it begins to rain little, the birds reach the top of the trees in the mountains and begin to nest. We simply hunt a few, maybe 8 between both species, that's enough for everyone, and we are not predators of the environment, even if they are in season, it is not good to kill so many of these animals, there are people who in one night take more than 50.
En el momento que teníamos ya algo para llevar, comenzamos con la casería de conejos silvestres, eran aproximadamente las 10-11pm y según mis primos, esta era la hora buena para esta labor, encontramos rastros, excremento y algunas madrigueras, pero no tuvimos suerte, no encontramos ni un solo conejo en toda la noche, solo vimos uno en la lejanía pero no logramos llegar a el antes que corriera, la idea es cegarlo con la luz de la linterna pero es muy difícil. Así que regresamos antes de las 12 de medianoche, por que aunque no lo crean aquí la gente le teme a esta hora, por que según comienzan las animas o fantasmas a salir y no queríamos cruzarnos con alguno.
At the moment we had something to take away, we started with the hunting of wild rabbits, it was approximately 10-11pm and according to my cousins, this was the good time for this work, we found traces, excrement and some burrows, but we were not lucky, we did not find a single rabbit all night, we only saw one in the distance but we did not manage to get to it before it ran, the idea is to blind it with the light of the flashlight but it is very difficult. So we returned before 12 midnight, because believe it or not, people are afraid of this time of night, because as the ghosts begin to come out, we didn't want to come across one.
Regresamos a casa, sanos y salvos, pero con una nueva experiencia para mi y algo para cocinar y en la mañana con mi familia.
