In Japanese culture we hear a lot the expression "Itadakimasu", always used at the time of going to eat, we see it in animated series, movies or other entertainment media, we often confuse and relate this term with the expression "bon appetit" used by people on this side of the world. But its meaning goes far beyond a simple good courtesy when going to eat.
So, if "Itadakimasu" does not mean "bon appetit", what connotation can be given to this word? First we must know the origin of the word, in Japanese this word is composed of two verbs "to eat" and "to receive". Therefore, the expression "Itadakimasu" is used to give thanks for the food, we thank the animals and plants that gave their lives for the food we eat and the people who participated in its preparation.
Another very important point is that "Itadakimasu" is an expression that is always used before starting a meal (not during, not after) said by the diner himself, but never said by one person to another.

En la cultura japonesa escuchamos mucho la expresión “Itadakimasu”, usada siempre al momento de ir a comer, lo vemos en series animadas, películas u otro medio de entretenimiento, muchas veces confundimos y relacionamos este término con la expresión “buen provecho” que usamos las personas de este lado del mundo. Pero su significado va mucho más allá de una simple buena cortesía al momento de ir a comer.
¿Entonces, si “Itadakimasu” no significa “buen provecho” que connotación se le puede dar a esta palabra? Primero hay que conocer el origen de la misma, en japonés esta palabra está compuesta por dos verbos “comer” y “recibir”. Por lo tanto, la expresión “Itadakimasu” se utiliza para dar gracias por la comida, se agradece a los animales y plantas que dieron su vida por los alimentos que comemos y a las personas que participaron en su elaboración.
Otro punto muy importante es que “Itadakimasu” es una expresión que se utiliza siempre antes de empezar una comida (no durante, ni después) dicho por el propio comensal, pero nunca lo dirá una persona a otra.
