The photo above is another one of my wife’s creations. It is a fresh concoction of fire cider, ready to be capped. Fire cider is a spicy tonic that has been used for generations to prevent and treat colds, with the aim of boosting your immune system.

There are also claims that it can help improve blood circulation and digestion. I am not a doctor or a natural medicine guru; I just know that my wife has packed it full wholesome ingredients that must be good for you.

In this particular fire cider recipe, it contains ginger, turmeric, garlic, chilli, grapefruit, onion and rosemary topped up with apple cider vinegar!

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Place all the ingredients in a clean jar.
  • Weigh down the ingredients to ensure there are no bubbles, then cap the jar.
  • Shake well.
  • Leave the jar on the bench to sit for 4-6 weeks.
  • After the fermenting period is complete, strain the fire cider into a clean jar.
  • Refrigerate.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS:

  1. Take 1 to 2 tablespoons a day in water as a preventative measure during the cold and flu season.
  2. Take 1 to 2 tablespoons every three to four hours, at the first sign of a cold or flu.
  3. Add mixers to taste:
    • Cold mixers like orange juice or lemonade complement the flavours.
    • Hot water with a dash of honey makes a nice warm drink.
  4. Add to food to enhance flavour:
    • Use fire cider as a salad dressing.
    • Drizzle over vegetables.
    • Mix into soups for a spice boost.

TASTE:

Fire cider is definitely not for the faint hearted. The flavour of each fire cider concoction will vary depending on the specific ingredients you use, but it tends to have a hot, pungent, sweet and sour taste to it.

If you are a fan of hot and spicy foods, then consuming the fire cider straight is for you and will give you a good kick start to the day. This is my preferred way of having fire cider.

For those of you that are not quite as brave or adventurous, then experimenting with a mixer that suits your palate would be the way to go.

Refrigerated fire cider it can last up to a year. Bottoms up and enjoy!!! 😆
