Today was the first day of the tomato glut at the allotment. I've had the odd single cherry tomato the past two weeks but nothing like today's haul. This signals that time of year where I get so many at once that friends and family start to call me the tomato man š
Wandering around with punnets of tomatoes trying to foist them on people like some type of demented fruit bearing Santa.
Have my tomato-ey produce, and here's a suspicious looking bag of green herbage š¤£
The sun has put in an appearance again and we've had a late bloom at the allotment. The veg is going wild and the bees are buzzing around flowers that are opening to face the sun.
Today's haul included much herbage and a fair amount of tomatoes. I always used to struggle when I got a glut to know what to do, but after a few years I figured out that it is all about seasonal cooking.
Left to right āļø: mint, parsley, chives, tomatoes and flowering basil.
The tomatoes and the flowering basil went into making a bruschetta tomato mix (basically chopped tomatoes, chopped basil, olive oil, balsamic vinegar & a pinch of salt and black pepper) which can be eaten as a salad on its own. The basil that was flowering was particularly pungent, and although the flowers are edible they don't keep for long.
The mint, parsley and a good amount of the remaining basil went into making a mint & pea herby lasagna. I'd say about 50% of the ingredients in that meal were from the allotment which is pretty good... now I just have to get used to eating bruschetta for breakfast every day. Life is hard š
