Today Was The First School Day

In most municipalities, today was the first school day. All the schools, universities and other learning institutes will be open normally this semester. Primary and middle schools were open for two weeks in the second half of May before the beginning of the summer holiday. There was no significant increase in the number of Covid-19 cases among teachers. The students did not transmit the disease in any significant numbers. We'll see if secondary schools will remain open.

The number of cases is still quite low but it has gone up in the last couple of weeks. The reason for that is by all accounts holiday makers returning from abroad. 30 staff members are quarantined in the local regional hospital. It's almost guaranteed that the number of cases will keep growing. People will start using public transport. An official recommendation to use masks has been given for situations where it is impossible to keep 1-2 metres of distance. Cabinet ministers disagree on whether quarantines should be supervised and whether there should be fines if they are violated.

The next holiday is the week-long autumn break in October. Christmas holiday will begin couple of days before Christmas Eve, which is a holiday and the main event in Finland. It is normally a couple of weeks long.
