Día de Aventuras en el servicio de Neonatología
Desde que inicias la carrera siempre te preguntan que cual especialidad piensas hacer en el futuro. Esa es como la pregunta que todo estudiante de medicina debe responder a la mayoría de personas cuando mencionas tu profesión. Sin embargo, estamos claros que la gran mayoría no tenemos ni la mas mínima idea de eso, si no hasta mucho después de rotar por los distintos servicios del hospital.
Since you start your career, they always ask you what specialty you plan to do in the future. That's like the question that every medical student should answer most people when you mention your profession. However, we are clear that the vast majority do not have the slightest idea of that, if not until long after rotating through the different services of the hospital.
Una vez alguien me dijo que ese servicio donde te sintieras "como pez en el agua" seria tu especialidad. Pues a pesar de que siempre dije que yo NUNCA podría hacer pediatría, adivinen que paso. . . Pues ese servicio donde me siento cómoda es precisamente pediatría. Por eso es que mi abuela siempre dice que uno nunca debe decir "De esta agua no beberé".
Someone once told me that that service where you feel "like a fish in water" would be your specialty. Well even though I always said that I could NEVER do pediatrics, guess what happened. . . Well, that service where I feel comfortable is precisely pediatrics. That is why my grandmother always says that one should never say "I will not drink this water."
La verdad es que después de haber rotado en todos los servicios del hospital, puedo decir que lo que me gusta es pediatría, incluso si nos vamos más allá, ahora que me encuentro haciendo mi tesis, que trata sobre recién nacidos febriles, he pasado mucho tiempo en el área de cuidados intensivos neonatales, y debo decir que estoy completamente fascinada con esta especialidad. Los recién nacidos son un grupo etario bastante particular y delicado, pero es fascinante saber sobre ellos, como su pequeño cuerpecito funciona de una forma tan distinta pero a la vez similar al de adultos. Es un mundo completamente nuevo, las dosis, los valores referenciales todo es completamente diferente, la verdad es que los neonatologos son unos profesionales a los cuales les tengo muchísima admiración.
The truth is that after having rotated in all the services of the hospital, I can say that what I like is pediatrics, even if we go further, now that I am doing my thesis, which deals with febrile newborns, I have spent a lot time in the neonatal intensive care area, and I must say that I am completely fascinated with this specialty. Newborns are a very particular and delicate age group, but it is fascinating to know about them, how their little body works in such a different way but at the same time similar to that of adults. It is a completely new world, the doses, the reference values, everything is completely different, the truth is that neonatologists are professionals to whom I have a lot of admiration.
Es curioso que yo siempre dije que quería ser cirujana, luego de que comencé a ver cual era la materia que se veía en cirugía me desencanté un poco. Incluso me sorprendí cuando después de hablar de lo peor sobre medicina interna, ahora le tengo cierto gusto. A veces me sorprende lo mucho que he evolucionado en estos casi 7 años de carrera, mis gustos e incluso la forma y métodos con los que estudio han cambiado muchísimo, hoy miró hacia atras y no reconozoco a esa Maria que inciaba primer año de medicina, mi perspectiva con respecto a esta bonita profesión ha cambiado bastante, siento esa responsabilidad por saber, para poder ayudar a mis pacientes, cada día me convenzo más de que estoy en el lugar correcto, y de que tomé la mejor decisión al entrar a la facultad de medicina.
It is curious that I always said that I wanted to be a surgeon, after I began to see what was the matter that was seen in surgery I was a little disenchanted. I was even surprised when after talking about the worst of internal medicine, I now have a certain liking for it. Sometimes it surprises me how much I have evolved in these almost 7 years of career, my tastes and even the way and methods with which I study have changed a lot, today I looked back and I do not recognize that Maria who was starting her first year of medicine, My perspective regarding this beautiful profession has changed a lot, I feel that responsibility to know, to be able to help my patients, every day I am more convinced that I am in the right place, and that I made the best decision when I entered the faculty of Medicine.
