¡Estoy contenta! Por primera vez en mi experiencia laboral y personal, escribí un libro, nominado como una de los finalistas de los premios Gourmand Awards en la categoría C14 Latino América en www.cookbookfair.com. En este post le quiero compartir todos los detalles de esta experiencia, que para mí fue fantástica.
El año pasado el mundo sufrió una crisis sanitaria que trajo mucha incertidumbre, miedos, desesperanza, ansiedad –demasiada diría yo - por el encierro obligatorio producto del virus COVID -19, que provoco una pandemia mundial que dejo muchos muertos. Nos mandaron a todos a casa a cuidarnos y cuidar de los demás. Así que hice una mudanza de mi oficina a una improvisada en casa para cumplir y continuar laburando. Para no caer en la ansiedad y el miedo, decidí aprovechar todas mis horas libres a crear.
Aproximadamente en mayo de 2020, a la junta directiva de VenMundo y a mí se nos presentó la duda de qué podríamos hacer este año para conmemorar el Arepazo Mundial, el segundo sábado de septiembre, pues existía la incertidumbre de una cuarentana prolongada que “terminaría” a finales de diciembre o principios de enero del siguiente año. ¿Complicado no? Pensamos en suspender el evento o intentar usar las herramientas de la tecnología para llegar a cabo el evento.
I am happy! For the first time in my work and personal experience, I wrote a book, nominated as one of the finalists of the Gourmand Awards in the category C14 Latin America at www.cookbookfair.com. In this post I want to share with you all the details of this experience, which for me was fantastic.
Last year the world suffered a health crisis that brought a lot of uncertainty, fears, hopelessness, anxiety -too much I would say- due to the compulsory confinement as a result of the COVID-19 virus, which caused a worldwide pandemic that left many dead. We were all sent home to take care of ourselves and others. So I moved from my office to an improvised one at home to comply and continue working. To avoid anxiety and fear, I decided to use all my free time to create.
Around May 2020, VenMundo's board of directors and I were faced with the doubt of what we could do this year to commemorate the Arepazo Mundial, the second Saturday of September, since there was the uncertainty of a prolonged quarantine that would "end" in late December or early January of the following year. Complicated, isn't it? We thought about suspending the event or trying to use the tools of technology to make the event happen.
En mi proceso de creatividad volví a leer y releer lo que hicimos durante 9 años y ver que podríamos rescatar para organizar el 9º Arepazo Mundial en medio de la pandemia. Descubrí todas las historias, anécdotas y recetas de arepas que recogimos en todos los eventos y publicados en la página web: www.diamundialdelaarepa.com. ¡Empecé por ahí!
En un Word volqué todo lo que iba encontrando en mis lecturas e investigaciones diarias y fui dándole forma a un libro de recopilación como una forma de agradecer y reconocer a las innumerables personas (los directores de VenMundo, emprendedores de la arepa, voluntarios y arepa lovers) que han contribuido durante 9 años en este importante evento de la diáspora venezolana. A veces me daba hasta las 2-3 de la mañana escribiendo.
Entendí que Venezuela no es solo un lugar con hermosas regiones naturales, sino que es un destino gastronómico de ensueño. Nuestra gastronomía está marcada por una amplia historia cultural llena de exquisitos aromas y sabores, que mezcla platos coloridos combinados con picantes, especias y sabores exóticos de raíces africanas, europeas y aborígenes, que hacen los platos únicos y bien recibidos en el mundo. Idea que quería –y creo que lo logré- plasmar en este libro de recopilación.
In my creative process I went back to read and reread what we did for 9 years and see what we could rescue to organize the 9th Arepazo Mundial in the middle of the pandemic. I discovered all the stories, anecdotes and recipes of arepas that we collected in all the events and published on the website: www.diamundialdelaarepa.com. I started there!
In a Word document I dumped everything I found in my daily reading and research and I was shaping a compilation book as a way to thank and recognize the countless people (VenMundo directors, arepa entrepreneurs, volunteers and arepa lovers) who have contributed for 9 years in this important event of the Venezuelan diaspora. Sometimes I was up to 2-3 in the morning writing.
I understood that Venezuela is not only a place with beautiful natural regions, but also a dream gastronomic destination. Our gastronomy is marked by a wide cultural history full of exquisite aromas and flavors, which mixes colorful dishes combined with spicy, spices and exotic flavors of African, European and aboriginal roots, which make the dishes unique and well received in the world. Idea that I wanted -and I think I succeeded- to capture in this compilation book.
¿Cómo llegue al Gourmand Awards?
Publiqué el libro de manera gratuita en la página web www.venmundo.com. Fue un éxito, comenzaron a llegar los comentarios positivos, incluso anécdotas de personas que revivían momentos especiales en familia y amigos. Para mí fue una alegría recibir cada uno de esos comentarios. Tanto que empezó a recorrer el libro por las distintas redes sociales, específicamente en Whatsapp. Mis compañeros de la Junta Directiva de VenMundo me decían: “chama, tu libro me ha llegado unas 4 veces en los grupos donde estoy”. De alguna manera se hizo viral y supongo que esta manera llegó a las manos de los jurados de Gourmand Awards.
En noviembre recibo una carta de Edouard Cointreau, presidente de Gourmand Awards, donde me decía que el libro Las Mejores 50 recetas del Día Mundial de la Arepa había sido nominado entre los 10 mejores de la categoría C14 Latino América y que tenía derecho al certificado de la competencia. Para mí fue una sorpresa, no entendía cómo llegue allí si no me había suscrito a ningún concurso.
Resulta que los Gourmand Awards premian los mejores libros de comida y vino, impresos o digitales, así como la televisión de comida desde 1995. Emocionada, agradecí la oportunidad que me estaban dando con este trabajo, que fue en equipo. Todos de alguna manera pusieron un grano de arena para crear esta importante recopilación de nuestra historia culinaria. ¡Felicitaciones a todos!
En diciembre recibí una segunda comunicación de Edouard Cointreau donde me informaba que el libro Las 50 Mejores Recetas del Día Mundial de la Arepa estaba entre los 3 mejores libros de la categoría C14 Latino América y una invitación para la ceremonia de premiación en en Les Cordeliers en París el 29 de noviembre de 2021. Por razones económicas, no podré acudir a esta celebración, pero me llevo la satisfacción de estar ahí, representar a mi país y dejar una huella contando nuestros orígenes, cultura, costumbres e identidad.
How did I get to the Gourmand Awards?
I published the book free of charge on the website www.venmundo.com. It was a success, positive comments started to come in, including anecdotes from people who relived special moments with family and friends. For me it was a joy to receive each of those comments. So much so that the book began to travel through the different social networks, specifically on Whatsapp. My colleagues on the Board of VenMundo told me: "chama, your book has reached me about 4 times in the groups where I am". Somehow it went viral and I guess this way it reached the hands of the Gourmand Awards jurors.
In November I received a letter from Edouard Cointreau, president of Gourmand Awards, where he told me that the book Las Mejores 50 recetas del Día Mundial de la Arepa had been nominated among the 10 best in the category C14 Latin America and that I was entitled to the certificate of the competition. For me it was a surprise, I did not understand how I got there if I had not subscribed to any contest.
It turns out that the Gourmand Awards honor the best food and wine books, print or digital, as well as food television since 1995. Excited, I was grateful for the opportunity they were giving me with this work, which was a team effort. Everyone in some way did their part to create this important compilation of our culinary history. Congratulations to all!
In December I received a second communication from Edouard Cointreau informing me that the book Las 50 Mejores Recetas del Día Mundial de la Arepa was among the 3 best books in the category C14 Latin America and an invitation to the award ceremony at Les Cordeliers in Paris on November 29, 2021. For economic reasons, I will not be able to attend this celebration, but I take with me the satisfaction of being there, representing my country and leaving a mark telling about our origins, culture, customs and identity.
