One morning I found out that I could not open the gate of the house with my remote control. We had to use the small door which so many red ants use as their traveling route to the neighbour’ bamboo grove. So, I always tried to stay away from this side entrance. I had to phone up my good old builder to check out the electric wire as soon as possible. They were very busy building houses for foreign expats who came to retire in the countryside. The latest count was nine houses; they must have been making lots of money!
After two days of waiting, three people arrived to check out the motor for automatic movement of the gate and all the electric switches. They found out that the whole set of switch and electric wires were broken. This meant all the lighting at the wall and by garden went all dark. I had to think about a new way to light up the gate during nighttime. Then they had to takE a good look at the motor to see whether it had been damaged.
Surprise! They found out that a snake had been inside the motor and old snake skin was inside. I could hardly believe that a snake could get inside this motor through a very small hole by the side of the lid. But we could not be certain whether this snake caused the electrical switch to die completely. They had to check whether the motor was in working order. This meant that a junior trainee had to go fetch some extra long wire for hooking up the motor switch with live electricity.
The summer heat was very harsh but these local workers could continue to work for hours under the sun. They were discussing about taking out all the electric wire under the ground and across the lawn in order to lay a new set of wire! I was shocked by the drastic measure and told them to leave the old burnt out wire as they were. We should think about an alternative way of connecting the motor to the electricity pole at the other end of the lawn. I told them we might have to think of dangling the wire in the air so it would be much easier for repair or replacement in the future.
เมื่อเดือนก่อนที่บ้านสวนมีเรื่องให้ตื่นเต้น เราเข้าบ้านไม่ได้ เพราะประตูไม่ยอมเปิดเวลาใช้รีโมต เราต้องเข้าบ้านผ่านประตูบานเล็กแทน เราไม่ขอบไปใกล้ประตูนี้นัก เพราะว่ามีมดแดงเดินไปมาประจำ มดแดงใช้เส้นทางนี้เป็นถนนมอเตอร์เวย์ไปที่ป่าไผ่ของเพื่อนบ้าน เราต้องรีบโทรศัพท์ไปหาช่างเก่าแก่ของเรา ให้ช่วยมาดูและแก้ไขปัญหาให้ด้วย แต่ช่างและทีมงานกำลังยุ่งอยู่กับการสร้างบ้านให้ฝรั่งที่มาแต่งงานอยู่กับคนอีสานที่ต่างจังหวัด เขาสร้างบ้านเก่งมาก ตอนนี้พวกเขากำลังสร้างบ้านหลังที่9ในรอบสองปี เราคอยอยู่สองวัน กลุ่มช่างก็มาถึงในวันที่แดดร้อนจัดมาก ช่างมาถึงก็เริ่มดูระบบไฟฟ้าก่อน ไล่ดูสายไฟและสวิตช์ไฟสองสามจุด
ช่างพบว่าสายไฟฟ้าเก่าหมดสภาพแล้ว ไฟฟ้าไม่วิ่งผ่าเลย ทำให้หลอดไฟหน้าบ้านที่ประตูใช้ไม่ได้แล้ว และเครื่องมอเตอร์เปิดปิดประตูอัตโนมัติ จึงไม่มีไฟฟ้าเข้าเครื่อง ช่างต้องตรวจดูว่ามอเตอร์ประตูยังใช้งานได้หรือเปล่า พอเปิดกล่องออกมาดูก็เจองูมาลอกคราบอยู่ข้างในกล่อง ตัวงูไม่อยู่แล้ว มีเหลือแต่หนังงูแห้งๆ แต่ก็ไม่สามารถสรุปได้ว่างูมาทำไฟฟ้าช็อตหรือไม่ ช่างต้องส่งลูกน้องไปเอาสายไฟยาวสิบกว่าเมตรมาทดสอบมอเตอร์ ผลปรากฏว่ามอเตอร์ยังใช้งานได้ตามปกติ สิ่งที่เสียคือสายไฟฟ้าและระบบสวิตช์ เรารู้ว่าปัญหาคืออะไร คราวนี้ก็ต้องเลือกทางแก้ปัญหาที่เหมาะสม
ตอนแรกช่างบอกว่าจะต้องเลาะเอาสายไฟฟ้าเก่าออกให้หมด นั่นหมายถึงต้องขุดออกจากใต้ดินและตามสนามหญ้า แล้วฝังท่อใหม่ เราก็ตกใจมากว่าทางออดนี้ใช้เวลาและพลังงานมากเกินไป และถ้ามันเสียอีกพวกเราก็ต้องมาขุดเลาะสายไฟฟ้าอีก เราก็บอกให้ทิ้งระบบเก่าไว้ตามเดิม ไม่ต้องไปยุ่งกับของเก่า เราจะเดินสายไฟฟ้าใหม่ โดยไม่มีการฝังในดิน แบะจะใช้ระบบลอยมาผ่านต้นไม้สองต้น ดึงข้ามสนามมาเลย แล้วค่อยตั้งเสาไฟฟ้าใหม่ตรงใกล้ๆถนน จึงเดินสายไฟฟ้าลงดิน เพื่อต่อเข้ากับมอเตอร์ เราจะได้ตืดตั้งไฟส่องสว่างใหม่ที่ใช้โซลาร์เซลล์ด้วย เหมือนโยนหินทีเดียวได้นกสองตัว ช่างก็ยอมตามใจเรา และตกลงว่าจะเอาวิธีนี้เป็นการแก้ปัญหา ช่างเริ่มชินกับวิธีคิดแปลกๆของเราแล้ว เราคิดนอกกรอบบ่อยมาก ชีวิตก็เลยไม่เหมือนคนทั่วไป เราจึงเปีนแกะดำตัวเดียวในหมู่ญาติพี่น้องนั่นเอง
We had to wait for almost a month for the builders and technicians to be available for working on the new wiring system. This gave me time to look around for a new lamp with solar panel for lighting the front gate. There is always something exciting happening around the house so I have to be alert and grounded all the time.
