Debo confesarles que desde pequeña he sido cautivada por la cultura asiática (sin menosprecio de nuestra cultura venezolana y latina), primero con el manga y el animé, y luego de adolescente con las series y dramas (doramas) asiáticos. Recientemente disfruté de una verdadera joya de los dramas coreanos y deseo que ustedes también lo gusten. Si no les llama la atención todo lo anteriormente dicho sobre la cultura asiática, pero les interesa el tema del emprendimiento, del liderazgo y trabajo en equipo no pueden perderse de ver Start-Up.

I must confess that since I was a child I have been captivated by Asian culture (without disrespecting our Venezuelan and Latin culture), first with manga and anime, and then as a teenager with Asian series and dramas (doramas). I recently enjoyed a true gem of Korean dramas and I hope you enjoy it too. If you don't care for all of the above about Asian culture, but are interested in entrepreneurship, leadership and teamwork, you can't miss Start Up.
“Start-Up” no es el típico drama en el que el protagonista es un CEO o hijo de un multimillonario que tiene su vida resuelta, y del que una chica pobre se enamora, a pesar de tener él un carácter prepotente y altivo, ¡al contrario! Es un chico que desea ver crecer su proyecto tecnológico, pero que presenta muchos obstáculos en el camino; entre ellos, sus propias inseguridades.
Si desean adentrarse en el mundo de las empresas llamadas “Start up”, Silicon Valley, Financiamiento y otros temas referentes al liderazgo de tales empresas, podrán aprender un poco de esto en esta serie de televisión coreana.
"Start-Up" is not the typical drama in which the protagonist is a CEO or son of a multimillionaire who has his life figured out, and with whom a poor girl falls in love, despite his overbearing and haughty character, on the contrary! He is a boy who wants to see his technological project grow, but there are many obstacles in the way; among them, his own insecurities.

¿QUÉ ES UNA START UP?
De acuerdo a Irene Cañete, en el portal web de BBVA Provincial, se puede resumir la esencia de una ‘start up’ en esta sentencia: “Reinventarse o morir”. En inglés, significa “empresa emergente”, pero que se orienta a la parte de innovación tecnológica, las cuales demandan una inversión inicial más baja que cualquier otro emprendimiento. Y para financiar dichas empresas se utilizan varias modalidades:
FFF (Family, Friends and fools):
Estas son las personas más allegadas a los que forman dicha ‘start up’, los cuales aportan un pequeño capital para impulsar la creación de las mismas.‘Business angels’:
Estas son personas o “ángeles” que deciden apoyar el proyecto de la ‘start up’ invirtiendo su propio dinero, queriendo obtener con dicha inversión una parte de las acciones de la empresa y verla crecer. Estos ‘angels’ también aportan contactos o clientes que lo ayudarían en el crecimiento de la microempresa.
WHAT IS A START UP?
According to Irene Cañete, on the BBVA Provincial website, the essence of a 'start up' can be summarized in this sentence: "Reinvent yourself or die". In English, it means "emerging company", but it is oriented to the technological innovation part, which demand a lower initial investment than any other venture. And several modalities are used to finance these companies:
- FFF (Family, Friends and fools):
These are the people closest to those who form such 'start up', which provide a small capital to boost the creation of the same.
- 'Business angels':
These are people or "angels" who decide to support the project of the 'start up' by investing their own money, wanting to obtain with such investment a part of the shares of the company and see it grow. These 'angels' also provide contacts or clients that would help in the growth of the microenterprise.
Otras formas de financiamiento son el ‘Seed Capital’, o capital semilla que invierten aquellos que ven en la empresa un buen potencial, aunque aún no sea lucrativa; ‘Venture Capital’, o capital riesgo que no proviene de personas particulares, sino de fondos especializados de inversión que llegan a ser cantidades mayores de financiamiento; y la ‘Private equity’ que son financiamientos dados a empresas ya casi consolidadas para expandir más el negocio.
Other forms of financing are 'Seed Capital', or seed capital invested by those who see good potential in the company, even if it is not yet profitable; 'Venture Capital', or risk capital that does not come from individuals, but from specialized investment funds that provide larger amounts of financing; and 'Private equity', which is financing given to almost consolidated companies to further expand the business.
Estos tipos de financiamiento podremos verlos a lo largo de la serie televisiva, y apreciaremos cómo van madurando los dueños de la ‘start up’ y su liderazgo. En ella, el protagonista masculino llamado Nam Do-san (Nam Joon Hyuk) es el pionero de la ‘start up’ llamada Samsan Tech, la cual fundó junto con otros dos amigos de la universidad (los tres son ingenieros informáticos) pero han tenido problemas para tener clientes y consolidarse, por lo cual decidieron apuntarse a Sandbox, el cual es como una jornada de capacitación y financiamiento para empresas de dicha índole, la cual lleva un proceso de selección y pruebas para obtener como premio inversión para impulsar el negocio, sueldo para los empresarios, adiestramiento y respaldo profesional.
These types of financing can be seen throughout the TV series, and we will see how the owners of the startup and their leadership mature. In it, the male protagonist named Nam Do-san (Nam Joon Hyuk) is the pioneer of the start up called Samsan Tech, which he founded along with two other friends from college (all three are computer engineers) but have had trouble getting customers and consolidate, so they decided to join Sandbox, which is like a training and financing journey for companies of this kind, which takes a selection process and tests to obtain as a prize investment to boost the business, salary for entrepreneurs, training and professional support.
La protagonista es Seo Dal-mi (SUZY), una chica que no pudo ir a la universidad por querer desarrollar su propio emprendimiento y por ayudar a su abuela en las finanzas del hogar trabajando arduamente en una cafetería, quien además es hija de un emprendedor que murió en un accidente y, por ende, ese legado ha quedado en su corazón.
El otro personaje principal es Han Ji-pyeong (Kim Sun Ho), un joven huérfano que, con el dinero que le dieron al salir del orfanato, tuvo que luchar por su sobrevivencia al punto de que llegó a ser un gran empresario gracias a la ayuda de la abuela de Seo Dal-mi.
The main character is Seo Dal-mi (SUZY), a girl who could not go to college because she wanted to develop her own business and help her grandmother in the household finances by working hard in a coffee shop, who is also the daughter of an entrepreneur who died in an accident and, therefore, that legacy has remained in her heart.
The other main character is Han Ji-pyeong (Kim Sun Ho), a young orphan who, with the money he was given when he left the orphanage, had to fight for his survival to the point that he became a great entrepreneur thanks to the help of Seo Dal-mi's grandmother.
Cada uno de los personajes tiene sus metas, luchas y glorias en este drama, y disfrutaremos no solo del desarrollo del emprendimiento, sino que cada uno irá madurando y fortaleciéndose como persona. Sin dejar a un lado que también existe un bello romance, en el que la honestidad, la lealtad, la amistad y la valentía juegan un papel protagónico.
