Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common cancer. On the list of causes of cancer-related death, colorectal cancer is at number three. It is not only found above 50 or 60 years of age but it is increasingly found among the under 50 adults. The researchers have found a relationship between early-onset colorectal cancer and level of vitamin D consumption.
Despite the overall decrease in colorectal cancer in the last 20 years or so, young-onset colorectal cancer is on the rise. Besides the association between colorectal cancer with obesity & a sedentary lifestyle, now it seems that lack of vitamin D, especially from the dietary source has an association with this increase incidence of colorectal cancer under 50 years adults. Milk or other dairy products, fish, eggs etc are considered rich sources of vitamin D.
This study was done on around 116,429 female nurses aged 25-42 years. The study began in the year 1989. The data was collected every two years from 1991 to 2015. The result showed that total vitamin D intake had a protective effect against the development of early-onset colorectal cancer. The study says:
โOur findings suggest that as little as 300 [international units or IU per day] of vitamin D (approximately 3 glasses of milk per day) may be associated with a 50% decreased risk of young-onset colorectal cancer,โ
