Vivimos en un mundo en el que lo audiovisual es el pan de cada día. No hace falta rebuscar demasiado para darnos cuenta de este hecho, pues solo basta con abrir nuestras redes sociales para encontrarnos con un montón de imágenes y videos, cuya función puede ser la de informarnos, motivarnos, conmovernos o simplemente entretenernos; de igual manera, somos constantemente bombardeados por distintos tipos de publicidad audiovisual, ya sea en redes sociales, en tv o en otros medios. Dicho esto, imaginemos que en nuestras redes sociales solo hubiese texto, sin nada de imágenes o videos, ¿acaso tendrían el mismo efecto en nosotros? Es una pregunta interesante en la cual pensar y que no se va a responder en este tema, pero podemos estar de acuerdo en que entendemos las cosas de manera más rápida a través de lo audiovisual.
Ahora bien, ¿quiere decir todo esto que la lectura ha perdido fuerza o importancia en el mundo moderno? Desde luego que no. La lectura, junto con la escritura, es una actividad intelectual que nos ha permitido conectarnos con la forma de pensar de personas de otras culturas, épocas e ideologías. La lectura nos enriquece en todo sentido y nos convierte en personas capaces de alcanzar un conocimiento aceptable de nuestro entorno, de quienes nos rodean y de nosotros mismos.
We live in a world where audiovisuals are our daily bread. It is not necessary to look too far to realize this fact, since it is enough to open our social networks to find a lot of images and videos, whose function may be to inform us, motivate us, move us or simply entertain us; similarly, we are constantly bombarded by different types of audiovisual advertising, either in social networks, on TV or other media. That said, let's imagine that in our social networks there was only text, without any images or videos, would they have the same effect on us? It is an interesting question to think about and one that will not be answered in this topic, but we can agree that we understand things more quickly through audiovisuals.
Now, does all this mean that reading has lost strength or importance in the modern world? Certainly not. Reading, along with writing, is an intellectual activity that has allowed us to connect with the way of thinking of people from other cultures, times and ideologies. Reading enriches us in every way and turns us into people capable of attaining an acceptable knowledge of our environment, of those around us and of ourselves.
Mientras más leemos, más aprendemos
The more we read, the more we learn
Cuando una persona lee, está aprendiendo; por lo tanto, cuanto más lea esa persona, más aprenderá. De ahí la importancia de adquirir buenos hábitos de lectura, lo cual contribuirá a nuestro conocimiento sobre cultura, sobre el mundo, sobre el ámbito profesional en el que nos desempeñamos y un sinfín de temas de interés. Para entender mejor este punto, pensemos por un momento en ciertas obras literarias que se han adaptado al cine. Muchos hemos visto algunas de estas películas basadas en gruesos libros que tal vez nunca habíamos leído. Las películas son grandiosas y nos muestran un mundo que no podríamos ver por otros medios; más aún, tras ver las películas algunos recurrimos a la fuente original, es decir, a las obras en las cuales están basadas. Si bien las películas nos cautivan, leer los libros nos dejan con un mayor entendimiento de las mismas.
When a person reads, he/she is learning; therefore, the more a person reads, the more he/she will learn. Hence the importance of acquiring good reading habits, which will contribute to our knowledge about culture, about the world, about the professional field in which we work and countless other topics of interest. To better understand this point, let's think for a moment about certain literary works that have been adapted into movies. Many of us have seen some of these movies based on thick books that we may never have read. The movies are great and show us a world that we could not see by any other means; moreover, after watching the movies some of us turn to the original source, that is, the works on which they are based. While the movies captivate us, reading the books leaves us with a greater understanding of them.

Si aplicamos eso al conocimiento en general, podemos razonar que, incluso hoy, la lectura sigue siendo el medio más importante para adquirir el saber, indistintamente de los otros métodos que existan. Es digno de mención todo esto ya que en esta comunidad nos dedicamos a leer y escribir, así que vale la pena fortalecer nuestros buenos hábitos de lectura/escritura.

If we apply that to knowledge in general, we can reason that, even today, reading remains the most important means of acquiring knowledge, regardless of the other methods that exist. It's worth mentioning all this since we in this community are dedicated to reading and writing, so it's worth strengthening our good reading/writing habits.
