The Newbie Initiative task was created to help and encourage newbies here on the hive and to expose them to the right knowledge.
Many thanks to @starstrings01, @aliento, @projectmamabg and others, the beautiful brains behind this wonderful initiative.

The topic “Why and How on Hive” is a must-know topic for everyone here on hive especially newbies. Having sound knowledge in this aspect will help one go very far and make posts enticing.

Two weeks ago on our newbie initiative platform, we had a meeting where we discussed extensively what to do here on the hive, things to avoid and ways to improve one's post.
I’ll be discussing briefly in this post.
Fasten your seat belt and ensure you take notes too

WHY WE SHOULD AVOID PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism is a serious offence by Law. It can be likened to stealing. It’s very wrong to use any author’s content without permission.
According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary, Plagiarism is defined as to steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one’s own: use another’s production without crediting the source.

No man is indeed an island of knowledge but that does not still encourage plagiarism. Here on Hive, plagiarism is taken as a serious offence and we have certain people ensuring this is strictly adhered to in each community. Engaging in plagiarism here on hive could lead to several warnings before the account gets blacklisted.

It’s advisable to source knowledge on your preferred topic by reading different opinions, books, writings and publications before writing your opinion on the subject matter in your own words.

Hive is a platform that gives everyone freedom to express oneself assertively and with the right methods. Hive is not topic selective and has different communities to fit in.
Avoid plagiarism at all costs!!

Moving on to the next subject we discussed, we talked about ways to avoid plagiarism at all costs and this led to discussing how to source for images, text and pictures.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOURCING FOR TEXT, IMAGES AND OTHER MATERIALS USED

Sourcing for text, images and any other publication material used is one sure way to avoid plagiarism especially when these materials are not yours.

Most images and text seen on the web are not free and have copyright laws attached to them for use. Some might require paying a certain amount of money to the original author to support his work or might have certain usage restrictions, for example, might not be free for use in television adverts or others.
We have some sites like freepik, canvas and other sites that offer some free images and text.
It’s important to always confirm if images or text we want to use our free or if they have copyright laws.
Note that, you must always attach your image link with images used here on Hive.

Furthermore, we discussed the need for more active participation here on Hive, the need to give reasonable comments to people’s posts and also why it’s not advisable to tag many people in a post.

WHY IT’S NOT ADVISABLE TO TAG MANY PEOPLE IN A POST

In a bid to ensure that our post is enticing enough, we sometimes tag numerous people and this is not a good practice. Tagging people who are not related in any way to your post can lead to a downvote from them and harsh reactions too.
If you need to tag people, ensure you tag people with who you either have a relationship with or have something to do with your post.
Know this simple truth and know peace.

WHY YOU SHOULD AVOID PUBLISHING THE SAME ARTICLE MORE THAN ONCE

Sometimes, we feel our post didn’t reach the set target and should have gotten more appreciation than it did. You are not alone friend cos I too feel the same way sometimes but this doesn’t mean you should keep posting the same article over and over again.

I strongly believe that Creativity is the mother of Innovation which is more reason why I encourage creativity. Pick up your pen and write down pieces of your imaginations, your everyday thought and events happening around you. This should help inspire your next post and kill that urge to repost that same article.

Reading books and listening to up-to-date news will also help increase your next post chances. Publishing the same post will just limit one’s potentials and opportunities to reach different people who want to hear your beautiful story.
So, stay Unique!!

Moving on from here, what do you think about the number of posts you should post daily?

WHAT IS THE ADVISABLE AMOUNT OF POST YOU SHOULD POST DAILY

Well, this question can have different answers but for a newbie here on the hive, it’s highly advisable to post one post per day. Yes, it sounds weird since what every newbie wants to do is to keep writing till it makes sense but I feel writing without proper evaluation and timing too can seriously affect your audience reaction and slowly kill their urge to read your post.

Therefore, it’s advisable to brood more on your post especially on its content, sourcing and areas of impact before posting. So, ensure you take out time when writing to avoid errors, plagiarism and other bad habits before posting. Thus, the need for a daybreak per post.
Interesting, right?

So, the next question is what should we do when we are not posting?

THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY ENGAGEMENT

Quality engagement is like good music to the soul. It's soothing and very encouraging. It’s important to engage meaningfully in other people’s posts, dropping enticing and related comments to various posts and making friends along the way.
At first, the reception might be slow but with time this has proven to work for many. Many people have become friends here on Hive from far and near all because of quality engagements.

Don’t underrate the power of Engagement!!

Finally, what other question is yet to be answered?

WHAT OTHER POINTS DID I LEARN FROM THE MEETING

As we all know, your first paragraph in any post will always determine if readers will continue reading or not. The first Paragraph is like Pareto’s principle and needs to be very attractive. Also, ensure that you engage readers well and ask questions too.

Another valid point made was on the use of the right tags for posts. Tags are very important when used right and can help attract the kind of audience you desire. So, always ensure that your tags are on point and are targeting your desired audience.

Finally, always post in the right community. Communities have their different topic focus and it’s important we understand them before posting in any of these communities.

I look forward to our next newbie initiative meeting as I am eager to learn more and share with my wonderful friends. Thanks for this great opportunity.
