Es importante que el personal de enfermería prepare el material que se utilizará, en éste caso hablamos de la dicha mascarilla, flujómetro y fuente de oxígeno.

Si el paciente se encuentra consciente se le debe informar la técnica que se va a realizar para así obtener su colaboración.

La mascarilla debe ir conectada a la fuente de oxígeno, a su vez entre la fuente de oxígeno y la mascarilla debe estar el flujómetro

La mascarilla se debe colocar sobre la nariz, la boca y el mentón del paciente que recibirá el oxígeno.

Enfermería debe vigilar que las cintas no molesten al paciente ¿De qué manera? Pues, no deben irritar el cuero cabelludo ni los pabellones auriculares, así mismo se debe vigilar que el oxígeno esté siendo suministrado en su totalidad sin vías de escape. Se debe vigilar la mucosa nasal y labial debido a que el oxígeno suele causar quemaduras, por lo tanto si es necesario deberán ser lubricadas.

Cuando se suministra oxígeno por mascarilla simple suele ser por flujo de oxígeno menor a 6 litros por minutos, así se logra evitar que el paciente respire de nuevo el CO2 que ha sido exhalado y a la vez mantiene una concentración de oxígeno.
When oxygen is supplied by a simple mask, it is usually by oxygen flow of less than 6 liters per minute, thus preventing the patient from breathing again the CO2 that has been exhaled and at the same time maintaining an oxygen concentration.
