[ESP-ENG] El atardecer de San Pedro – The sunset of San Pedro

One of the last trips before the Coronavirus took me to San Pedro, there in the state of Barquisimeto in western Venezuela. It was a lonely journey through paths that I had never known, but that left a pleasant gift for my memories. I look with nostalgia at the photographs that I captured that time, wishing to once again contemplate that sunset of incomparable nuances.

San Pedro, rocky terrain and full of fantasy. The sun covers with its light the most hidden corners, and gives them its splendorous shine. The mountains are crossed again and again, they look like slides. Beauty is found in even the most unusual landscapes, and life flourishes everywhere. A sigh returns to my gut with those memories that speak of mountainous landscapes.

¡Oh San pedro!

Oh Saint Peter! I never imagined missing your old roads and your absurd places. Now I value moments as if they were eternal, because the confinement of the pandemic has changed my perception of life. How to forget the melodies of your mountains? It's impossible, I confess, that's why I can't get you off my mind.

Your wonders dance even on the top of the hills. A simple but impressive little house hangs in the heights. Built with mud and bajareque, it is capable of withstanding much more than large foundations. Humility smells in its corners, just like life.

Under your mountains you harbor the hopes of the most helpless, who with their sheet houses take refuge in you. The shadow of the sunset dominates the world, and you, San Pedro, prepare to give them the night.

But before leaving, the sunshine comes together to give you a little summer warmth. And although the sky darkens the heat of the king star is felt in your lands, in your air that smells of mountains and new flowers. The sunset, your sunset, San Pedro, reintegrates the atmosphere as a symbol of the return of hopes, which although they seem dying, are stronger than ever.

At last the sun leaves and the shadows take over the world. The last corner of the twilight glow is reflected on the horizon. And you, Saint Peter, prepare for the stars and cloudy skies. I remember that silence of your environments, your zones; there was tranquility, only disturbed by the song of the nocturnal insects, which woke up to dominate the world with the night.

I would like to return to that place called San Pedro, gates of a magnificent heaven of mountains, and majestic hills. There life seems disconnected from the world and the universe, and everything is healthier, calmer, more beautiful. I will meet you, small town in the mountains, and our reunion will be a symbol of victory. There will no longer be a quarantine, nor a closed society. And I will value every moment that passes in your landscapes.

…I already long for it, or rather, I long for it with all my heart.
