Leslie Nielsen had been known as a serious actor going back to the 1950s, but he embraced his new turn as a comedic icon after his performance in the 1980 comedy movie Airplane!. On a more serious note, legendary cricket player Imran Khan went into politics and was eventually elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. Who saw those things coming? But they chose to make those changes in their lives.

Sometimes the best way to feel alive beyond simply existing and surviving is to do nerw things. Some of these things make sense for us, and some others may seem insane to people on the outside. If you're a nutritionist, it makes sense to devote time to studying whole foods for their effects on the human body. However, if you just turned 90 years old, then it seems insane to celebrate the milestone by jumping out of a perfectly functional airplane over shark-infested waters. In between you may decide to rebuild yourself for the coming summer in order to show off the new hard body in a Speedo or a g-string bathing suit.

Whichever of these we decide to do-- and whatever else we want to do which would be new for us-- it boild down to doing the same thing: to go outside our comfort zones. As long as we stay inside our comfort zones, we only do the familiar. We get sapped of the initiative to try new things, to have new experiences, and to meet new people.

Even if we have more money than Elon Musk and Warren Buffett combined, we can fall prey to limiting ourselves to our comfort zones. It's true that if we venture outside our comfort zones we risk losing as much as everything we have, it's also true that we will gain much more when we take the risk and succeed.

Some (More) Information about Dominique Moceanu

Given the injuries which had been part of her life the last few years (at the time), including during her high point at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games, the last time she had major success in competion was in 1998. At the 1998 Goodwill Games held in New York, New York, US, she became the first American gymnast to win the all-around competition in the short history (then 12 years) of the Goodwill Games.

After the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games, Moceanu took part in many professional gymnastics exhibitions and events. One of those events was a 100-city tour. Along the way, her coaches Béla Károlyi and Marta Károlyi retired. As a result of the retirement of her legendary coaches, she shited her training to the coaches at Moceanu Gymnastics (the gym begun by and operated by her family).

While doing more exhibitions, she still competed. However, in between the Olympics and Goodwill Games highlights, she took 9th place at the 1997 US Nationals. That same year she was named captain of a very inexperienced American team at the 1997 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships at Lausanne, Switzerland; while she qualified for the all-around final of that event, the experience was negative for her.

Although she intended to participate in the 2000 Sydney Summer Games, continued injuries combined with coaching changes and heavily-publicized family troubles derailed her attempts to compete in those Olympics. As a result of those and other factors, Dominique Moceanu the athlete retired from competitive gymnastics in 2000.
