Index4INDEX Card 182: Michael Jordan 1

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.

-- Michael Jordan

About the Quote

All championships are games (or events), but not all games (or events) are championships. Championships are events which require qualification to gain entry. In some cases, even a losing record during the season is enough to qualify for entry into a championship tournament.

Regular season events are numerous, and normally don't have urgency to them except in certain instances. Championships-- including the tournaments they finish-- have finality to them: there is no "next game" after losing a series (or even a game/match).

Because of the finality inherent in championships, every participant sharpens and intensifies focus on the task at hand. This requires teamwork and attention to detail. Attention to detail requires intelligence since it is the details which can make or break a run at a championship.

While it's possible to win games purely on talent, talent won't be enough during a championship tournament. By the time the tournament starts, all participants are at the same talent level, and they start from zero. That's when better execution of teamwork takes over for talent.
