Index4INDEX Card 154: Lucille Ball 1

I’d rather regret the things I’ve done than regret the things I haven’t done.

-- Lucille Ball

About the Quote

Most of us have regrets, even if we don't acknowledge them publicly. We regret things we did. We also regret things we didn't do.

If we regret things we did, at least we know we were able to move forward from them. What's done is done and can't be undone.

If, however, we regret things we didn't do, then we open ourselves to mental anguish from the "What If?" game we torture ourselves with as we play it in our minds day after day. Nothing good comes from playing that game, and that's time which would have been devoted to more productive activities.

Some Information about Lucille Ball

Lucille Désirée Ball was born in New York, New York, US on 1911-August-6. She died in Los Angeles, California, US on 1989-April-26.

Lucille Ball was an actress and performer whose career spanned radio, film, and television media. She was one of the top comedians in American television. She is best known for her starring role in the classic and pioneering comedy series I Love Lucy.

In 1940 she starred in the movie Too Many Girls, which also featured Cuban bandleader and actor Desi Arnaz. After they married each other in 1940, they spent the decade working separately.

In 1950 they formed Desilu Productions, and in 1951 they premiered I Love Lucy. In this ground-breaking comedy series they played versions of themselves. As successful as she was as an actress, I Love Lucy catapulted her to stardom, and the series was near the top in the ratings for much of the 1950s.

People know I Love Lucy for the performances on screen, but it was also a pioneer in television production. Its best known innovation was using three cameras to film each episode. It also defined many conventions used by later situation comedies for decades.

In 1960 Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz divorced, and in 1962 she succeeded him as president of Desilu Productions. This made her the only woman at that time to lead a major Hollywood production company. In 1964 she took a chance on a series which at the time was a big risk, and after two years of development the series debuted. The series? Star Trek.
