Benjamin Disraeli came from an Italian-Jewish family. He was both second child and eldest son of Isaac D'Israeli and Maria Basevi. While at synagogue Bevis Marks in 1813, Isaac D'Israeli had a quarrel there of such impact that in 1817 he decided that his children would be baptized as Christians.
At the time, when Benjamin Disraeli was at the age for bar mitzvah, people considered to be Jewish were excluded from serving in Parliament. For many years this was not a concern in general. In 1858 that restriction against Jewish Britons was removed, and that opened the door for Benjamin Disraeli to be elected to Parliament and later become Prime Minister.
