Nice to greet you again friends of #Liketu. This week, before being able to enjoy a few days of vacation, I have been working Tarragona. Because it is a tourist city and close to Port Aventura and Salou, hotel prices were very expensive and I decided then to make the hotel reservation in the town of Vilafranca del Penedés.
In this Catalan town lives my friend Damian, who for last Wednesday night organized a dinner with our mutual friend Nikolay. I arrived in Vilafranca after my work day around 8 pm. Damián went to the Air Penedés hotel where I was staying and after passing by his house to change clothes we approached the restaurant Cal Figarot walking. Nikolay was waiting for us at the door of the restaurant. The restaurant is striking from the moment you enter the hall on the first floor. In this hall there is a structure imitating the typical formation of human castles (Castells) that form the castellers in the festivities. In fact, the terrace of the hotel where we ate overlooks the square where the castellers of Vilafranca perform their training.
The second striking aspect of the restaurant is its menu. In it, as it could not be, appears the formation of a castell by the members of the local castellers. The menu is very varied and includes many typical Catalan tapas and also includes newly created tapas.
Damián, who was the host and who in turn invited us to the dinner, made the selection of the menu which I detail below in order of appearance of the dishes on the table.
Salmon toast stuffed with fresh cheese
This tapa was especially tasty. The combination of the lightly smoked salmon slices with the queso fresco on the lightly toasted bread was spectacular. In fact, once we finished all the tapas, we repeated a second serving of this dish.
Iberico ham and fried green peppers
Iberian ham is always a sure bet for success. Initially, we had ordered some Padrón green peppers, but they had run out. I loved these alternative peppers as much as the traditional Padrón peppers. Some of them even had a certain spicy touch that made them a hit with my friends as well.
Garlic prawns
This dish is typical of Spanish gastronomy and especially on the Mediterranean coast. The prawns were of good size, the olive oil used was of very good quality and the garlic was just the right amount to give an intense flavor to the food and not produce a bad feeling at bedtime.
Prawns, Eggs and Gulas
This dish was one of the best along with the salmon and cheese toast. The combination of the eel substitute with the prawns and the fried egg marinated with the beer we were drinking also delighted us.
Picaña with potatoes.
Picaña is a veal meat close to the hip. It was cooked to just the right doneness to have an intense flavor and at the same time the meat was very tender and melted in the mouth. As I am now writing these words my mouth is watering remembering the taste.
As the amount of food we ordered was a lot we did not eat dessert, but we went to one of the terraces near the town hall of Vilafranca del Penedès and drank a cocktail each. In my case my choice was a combination of Gin and tonic. In this way, we could continue to catch up after so many months without being able to be physically sharing our stories. After this drink, since the three of us had to work the next day, we each went to rest.
