Oggi 11 settembre è il tragico anniversario della caduta delle Twin Towers di New York, causato da un attentato terroristico con dirottamento di due aerei che si sono schiantati contro i grattacieli, provocandone il collasso strutturale e la caduta su stessi. Sono trascorsi 19 anni da quel drammatico evento, le cui scene ancora si conservano come fotogrammi nelle nostre memorie.
Io ricordo bene quel giorno, ero da poco rientrato dal mare, avevo trascorso una giornata divertet con i miei amici, giocando a palla sulla sabbia. Ero stanco ed affamato e appena entrato in casa, vidi mia madre e mia nonna incollati allo schermo, con l'acqua in pentola che bolliva. Alla mia domanda: Cosa è successo? Mia madre mi disse che un aereo si era abbattuto contro una delle due torri a New York e non so capiva ancora bene il motivo, si pensava ad un problema tecnico ma poco dopo un secondo aereo si era abbattuto contro l'altra torre. Era chiaro allora a tutti che era in corso un attentato terroristico.
Una delle immagini che racconta in modo terribilmente cruento la tragedia di quegli istanti è quella scatta da Richard Drew, The Falling Man.
Dopo che gli aerei si sono abbattuti sulle torri, un inferno di fuoco e fumo ha intrappolato le persone che si trovavano nei piani superiori, impossibile da salvare in così poco tempo. Presi dalla disperazione di morire bruciati, molti si lasciarono nel vuoto, nella speranza forse di porre fine alla loro vita in modo meno doloroso o probabilmente il panico ha fatto perdere la ragione. Difficile poter immaginare quali siano state le emozioni e le reazioni di un gesto talmente disperato come questo.
L'attacco al cuore del potere economico degli USA è stato davvero distruttivo, frutto di una spirale di odio e guerra che ormai si protrae da decenni.
Questo episodio mi ha talmente schockato che ho voluto studiare di più il fenomey del terrorismo e alla tesi di diploma dell'anno successivo, l'argomento da me scelto fu il Terrorismo Nazionale e come il metodo del Terrore nasce e si sviluppa già da secoli prima, riflettendosi nella letteratura e nell'arte.
Oggi, in memoria delle 2977 vittime è sorto il National September 11 Memorial & Museum, progettato dall' l'architetto israeliano-americano Michael Arad di Handel Architects. Molti caduti erano membri dei pompieri e delle unità di soccorso, giunte sul luogo per l'emergenza, e non valutando in tempo le conseguenze di quell'attentato. A loro è stato dedicato anche un film, World Trader Center con Nicholas Cage, in cui si descrive le vicende di due agenti della polizia portuale di New York, tra i primi ad entrare nelle torri subìto dopo l'attacco e rimasti intrappolati sotto le macerie.
Un mattone della storia da ricordare a dimostrazione del fatto che in guerra nessun è vincitore e che la catena di odio che s'innesta difficilmente si potrà spezzare.

My mother told me that a plane had hit one of the two towers in New York and I don't know she still understood the reason well, it was thought of a technical problem but shortly after a second plane had hit the other tower. It was clear to everyone then that a terrorist attack was underway.
One of the images that tells the tragedy of those moments in a terribly bloody way is the one taken by Richard Drew, ** The Falling Man **.
After the planes crashed into the towers, a hell of fire and smoke trapped the people on the upper floors, impossible to save in such a short time. Seized by the desperation of dying burnt, many left themselves in the vacuum, in the hope perhaps of ending their lives in a less painful way or perhaps the panic made them lose their reason. It is difficult to imagine what the emotions and reactions of such a desperate gesture as this were.
The attack on the heart of US economic power was truly destructive, the result of a spiral of hatred and war that has been going on for decades.
This episode shocked me so much that I wanted to study more the phenomenon of terrorism and the graduation thesis of the following year, the topic I chose was National Terrorism and how the Terror method was born and developed centuries before , reflected in literature and art.
Today, in memory of the 2977 victims, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, designed by the Israeli-American architect Michael Arad of Handel Architects, has been built. Many of the fallen were members of the firefighters and rescue units, who had come to the scene for the emergency, and did not evaluate the consequences of that attack in time.
